Snow storm? Really?

I just watched the Philadelphia news…the side roads there pretty much suck. A lot of people just keep getting stuck at the poorly or not plowed intersections.
I am thankful that I have a 4WD. I was the only vehicle that didn’t get stuck in our lot at work today, and we got nothing compared to other areas !

When S2 was a student at GW during Snowmageddon 2010, they missed 4 days of classes. They extended the semester a couple of days at the end of the term, taking away some of the reading days before finals began. Whether or not those days were used for actual classes was up to the professors.

cobrat, you are the only poster on CC who puts footnotes on his posts. :-B

I’m the pastor officiating the funeral, not the guest of honor or grieving family, so it’s not as tragic as it sounds.

DS#1 and #2 both had what are referred to at DS#2’s school as a “hurrication”. Several days of school closed due to hurricane evacuations. They survived. Somehow made up the classes or classwork or fit it into the remaining days.

One of the things that hasn’t changed is the group of people with SUV’s and AWD not having the brains that God gave geese. Friend of mine is on a local rescue squad, and they had quite a few cases of cars skidding off roads and whatnot, and a lot of them seemed to involve people in SUV’s driving too fast for conditions. According to him, some of the people went out driving in the middle of the storm simply to go our and show how AWD was just like a Jeep commercial or something. AWD is wonderful, it can get you through some pretty heavy stuff, but it doesn’t change the laws of physics. The rescue squad he is on covers some major interstate highways, along with state and local roads, and he was surprised how many people had that kind of problem, and how many of them apparently were joy riding. The good news is no one was hurt, just some damaged egos and banged up sheet metal.

The other thing I am grateful for, especially as I get older, is the snowblower that was bought after a particularly rough winter (95-96). I haven’t exactly babied it, I changed the oil once in a while, maybe a new spark plug, last year replaced the scrapers on it and a new cable for the auger, and it starts right up and works like a charm, amazing piece of equipment. We ended up with about 22" of snow, which is not the biggest snowfall I ever saw, and by doing two clearings it made it a lot easier.

Four wheel drive is not four wheel stop. These idiots must not have taken physics. I have no problem driving around with front wheel drive, and am extremely careful and not make sudden changes to break traction and brake gently. These guys think what is shown on car commercials can be duplicated by inexperienced drivers.

I am sure I could get my car out, but the streets here in Brooklyn are so messy that parking again would be a nightmare, as would parking wherever I went. Fortunately we have great public transportation! Alternate side parking rules (for street sweeping, lol, not with all this snow!) are suspended all week so I don’t have to drive until next Monday! Corners in general are slushy messes with foot-deep puddles of icy, muddy water. But the beat goes on.

I am one of the people with 4WD that doesn’t think that gives us an advantage over ice…we drive carefully without any cockiness. I remember driving up to Mass from NJ during a snowstorm and seeing a lot of idiots with a false sense of security with their SUVs. We were driving a motorhome at the time and finally pulled off of 95 in CT after seeing one too many SUVs end up in the woods.
I drive like Miss Daisy but I can get thru place that are unplowed where other vehicles get stuck , and that is helpful.
My husband grew up in Sweden where their driving school is far more involved than anything here in the US.

I know I would totally mess up on alternate side parking. My parking tickets would cost more than the parking garage. I park my car few blocks from my apartment. It saves me few hundred $$ a month. When I pulled in last Thu, I told the attendant not to worry about moving my car for a week.

Agreed on that alternate side parking. When we used to visit NYC frequently, no matter how carful we read the signs, we seemed to usually pick the wrong side of the road! We would wake up in the morning and notice that our car was the only one parked on that side of the street. Never got a ticket…but that’s because we moved it very early in the morning!

When there is snow, it’s good to find a parking garage or some off street parking no matter where you live.

I’ve got it down on my block and surrounding blocks. Fortunately (knock wood!) it’s not impossible where I live. I’ve been in this apartment for 9 years and I think I’ve gotten 2 parking tickets.

I guess the inter-city bus services between NYC and Boston should have been back to normal today (Monday). Is this correct?

Is the MBTA subway system (the “T”: Red Line, Green Line etc.) in Boston mostly back to normal?

Man, I’m supposed to be booking a flight to get to DC in the near future. Somehow, it’s hard to motivate myself to do so right now.

@mcat2, Boston got very little snow from this last storm. Anything you heard about the T not running last year was due to unusual and excessive amounts of snow from seemingly endless 1 1/2-2 foot storms. Everything should be running normally.

In the dc/va area some of the gas stations have run out of gas. I heard on the news one place in Bethesda, MD is charging $5.05/gallon for regular unleaded when the average is $2.15/gallon.

@himom Come to DC around Cherry Blossom time.

@Sue, Thanks.

No, avoid the cherry blossom madness! Wait until it’s actually warm. You can see redbuds and dogwoods and other lovely flowering things.

I have a meeting in supposed to attend in person in DC well before Cherry Blossom season, as well as another that I’m supposed to attend which MAY coincide with cherry blossoms. Have been in Korea during cherry blossom season, as well as DC–lovely!

@himom CC Meetup in DC? I don’t know when I’ll ever get to go to Hawaii.
