“Saw roads were atrocious tonight… google maps showing every single road in the DC area as red or orange around 8pm”
Hmm, thought it was just a tiny bit of snow today?

^^ I know one inch of snow creates havoc over here so just imagine what the weekend is going to be like. Schools opening late tomorrow. The roads are a parking lot.
I wish any two weather sites could agree, even just more or less. And D2 is going from Boston to NYC Sat am, coming back Sun for a show (so so she thinks.) They go the tickets in June. May take the train.
40/50 accidents around the beltway + 66 + 270 still at 11pm.
maybe I will get a delayed work opening tomorrow?! haha
I’m assigned to work with the client from h*** this weekend for the home healthcare moonlighting job. It’s a game of Russian roulette to see which one of her aides gets snowed in with her depending on when storm worsens. She’s 24/7 so aide can’t leave if replacement doesn’t get there. Wouldn’t mind the overtime with a nice client but this one never sleeps more than 1/2 hour at a time so it would be awful. Bringing food meds and flashlights just in case.
D was coming home from work tonight and did a 360 spin on northbound I95 as she was passing over the rappahannock bridge. She was only doing 45 MPH and hit a slick spot. Ended up perpendicular to the bridge barricade. She was unhurt- just shaken up. Luckily no other cars were around. She managed to get the car straight and parked on left shoulder before she called geico. Damage to front end was bumper removed and then right rear bumper dinged after she came around in the spin. Keeping our fingers crossed the car isn’t totaled.
She said her weekend class through drivers edge helped her stay calm and she tried to do what they taught but she hit a second slick spot that caused the 360. :-S
Glad she’s ok! I have to drive DH to Dulles at 5:45 this am. Not looking forward to this. Will get into rush hour on 495 just as rush hour hits. Have a PT appt at 8:30 right off 270. I think I’ll need a nap when I finally get home. Be careful, everyone.
Sent relatives word about impending storm and they just moved up nephew’s flight to CN to tomorrow with only 1 layover instead of 2 at no extra charge. They had no idea storm was coming or they could make penalty free changes. They’re grateful.
Sent DS a text about the impending storm as well earlier today. He actually called back. He said he needs to drive somewhere 5-10 miles away this Saturday. (I guess it is some volunteer type work he has been doing in the past several years.) I hope it will be closed or cancelled.) He also plans to travel a longer distance (to Boston, by train or bus) next Monday. Not sure whether the weather would be better by then.
@mcat2 travel Monday should be OK unless a lot of trees come down on the train lines.
Re: the volunteer thing. Medical things seldom close.
D1 flew out to Atlanta this morning for a big client meeting/dinner and flying back tomorrow morning at 6am. I am hoping she won’t have any issue. She packed extra clothes just in case.
Our forecast here in NW CT has gone from “big storm” to “wind and clouds”. Guess not here…at all.
We are in the heart of the mess here 6 miles from DC. All schools are closed today. The roads are a mess with the one inch of snow we had and it is all ice on the road. I thought I would head out to the grocery store today but with my rear wheel drive car I’m going to wait till the temperatures get up this afternoon to visit the empty shelves at the store.
You can tell we embrace snow and ice in this area.
I drove from Fairfax VA to Ft Meade MD this morning. The VA beltway was clean and at speed (up through Tysons), but once into MD it became a huge mess of black ice, accidents, and trucks parked on the shoulders. This continued up on 95 north with accidents that turned it into a parking lot. I heard people driving into VA from MD taking 2 hours what normally would have been a 40 minute trip. I’m glad I’m staying home tomorrow.
New Jersey forecast:
N.J. snowfall totals boosted in some areas, blizzard watch for 3 counties
@Thanks NOVADad99 for the update. It’s hard to tell based on the community roads here. I am seeing cars get stuck here but I think the main roads should be ok.
I’m in MD and our roads are fine. DH had no trouble last night or this morning going to work. My two daughters in Silver Spring had awful commutes home and were both sitting on buses not moving an hour ago trying to get to work. They are both on major bus routes.
Talked to S2 last night and he’s none too worried about the storm in DC. He’s planning to go to a basketball game Fri night. He needs to take a city bus to and from the game, and we warned him to be sure that the buses are running before he plans to go. His response is that he’ll walk home if the buses aren’t running – that’s an over 2 mile walk in a snowstorm for someone who doesn’t wear a hat, gloves or boots.
At what age do we stop worrying about them and their judgment?
In 2010, they shut down the buses for the storm. And it’s not easy to walk in 24 inches of fresh snow!
He may be DC’s first candidate in this year’s Darwin Awards.
