So I just throw it in the wash. Our last one was actually lands end, probably $300 10+ years ago, it’s lightweight. Totally jinxed myself, now my dryer is full of feathers. Does anyone have a recommendation? I might just buy another from lands end, before I got this one my mom actually would buy comforters and pillows from a down outlet in northeast NJ (not cheap). But she passed. I know folks have favorites for things. BTW really needs new mattress, but it’s such a commitment! I want to say price is no object, and just might, since my husband can sleep on nails.
I highly recommend a silk filled comforter. It keeps us warm in winter here in the PNW. It is washable (I wash mine regularly in our speed queen front loader), and has zero prickly feathers! This is what we have:

No duvet covers. Just a flat sheet under it hotel-style.
I sleep with the same down comforter all seasons. I put it in a duvet and a flat sheet. I ash the duvet and the flat sheet regularly, no the comforter.
I just had a custom bed cover/pillow set made. But now I wont let DH lie on the spread b/c the fabric could be damaged. He is non plussed
@oldfort same as you!
I have a 10+ year old down comforter. Embarrassingly I don’t remember where I purchased it, but it would be Macys (white sale) or Lands End. My duvet covers (I rotate based on mood) are Pottery Barn and Pine Cone Hill. In the summer I typically use the duvet without the insert, although I use insert under it for making the bed because I like how it looks.
My current lands end has held up well, all things considered (that I wash it, and I was literally talking to my husband about how nice it is to be able to fit it in the washer and dryer, and then it so,it an hour later).
I think I might order one!
If you decide to go with down we’ve been delighted with comforters from
Feathered Friends Down Comforters | Sleep in a Cloud of Warmth. Bought the Bavarian 700 - amazingly light but warm. I have no plans to ever wash the comforter, always use a sheet and cover which get washed as usual.
I’ve gotten several from the company store, they have all held up well. I use a duvet and wash the comforter itself rarely.
I do same as @oldfort - we have two dogs who sleep on (and sometimes in) our bed so the duvet gets washed weekly.
That said, I swapped our down comforter for a a lightweight coverlet earlier this summer and miraculously, I’ve not had a nighttime hot flash since (they plagued me all winter). I’m thinking our down comforter is too warm for the stage of life I’m in right now. Of course my H, who has thyroid issues, is always cold…so we may become a 1 bed, two blanket kind of couple come the fall.
Once I started getting hot flashes, DH and I went Scandinavian style and sleep with 2 separate blankets. Or I should say, I sleep with a REST comforter Award-Winning Evercool® Cooling Comforter | Rest® and DH sleep with 4 different blankets as I insist the room be kept at 65 degrees for sleeping. I figure no one sees our bedroom, and I’ve now joined the bedding chapter of WDNC (We Do Not Care) Club.
For me it’s nothing better than sleeping under a down comforter with the AC blasting. I sleep with a fan on me and AC on. I don’t have central AC so I could just have I on in my room.
Once you’re a grandparent, the list of “this will never get washed” items gets shorter and shorter! Who doesn’t love snuggling a toddler in your bed… until…
I had a thing with a duvet cover for DD years ago. I switched to a comforter which easily was washed. I fought with the duvet cover all the time.
There are some hilarious YouTube videos of people (like me) trying to put duvet covers back on. I watched a good friend easily do this…but I just couldn’t do it myself!
Our bed has a hand quilted quilt on it, that is machine washable.
My poor husband, I need to sleep on the side of the bed near the door, he sleeps right next to an a/c unit (old house). It’s set to 65 and he freezes (but is also a great sleeper so he manages).
Thank you, I was wondering if it was just me! I gave up years ago (and I roll up fitted sheets).
That “influencer” who does the “sushi roll” method of duvet covers on YouTube is mesmerizing. It’s like yoga without having to get on the floor. It’s just that her method cannot be replicated by an actual human with only two arms is the problem! But love her videos as a de-stressor!!!
I could teach you how to fold fitted sheets! But no to the duvet cover!
I ordered tbd silk fitted sheets mentioned in a post, I love the concept of a duvet very much, but the struggle is real. If it doesn’t work out I’ve also looked at all of the suggestions. Mattresses, pillows, bedding - so hard!
