So what are the CC COLLEGE grads doing?

Just out of pure curosity, I’m wondering what the former “kids” of CC are doing/planning to do now that they made it through undergrad. Fiscinating jobs? Grad. school? Medicine? Law? International conquest?

Daughter (Rice '07 Vocal Performance) landed an excellent job with a major insurance company in Houston. Benefits from Day 1. She plans to work a year or so, finish her discernment process for seminary, and then have a wedding and go to seminary in a city where her fiance matches for his residency (his choices are limited to certain cities where there is a seminary for her).

Son (University of Chicago '07 Sociology) landed a job with a real estate consulting firm. His interests revolve around urban design and planning. He’s investigating grad school down the road, but plans to work for awhile. Great job, great benefits, only downside (for mom)…its in LA.

Daughter (Wesleyan '04 government) fundraises and advocates for environmental issues. Every year, she considers grad school, then decides she likes what she’s doing too much, and puts it off another year.

Coaching in her sport. Her first ever professional coaching contract. Will consider if this will be her career, or, to continue to grad or law school, or public sector service… :)

ConnColl '07 grad, majored in psychology, is working at a summer camp this summer for emotionally disturbed children and teenagers. Then he’s either going to DC to work for a psychologist in private practice and to live with two close friends from college OR he’s going to Providence where he’ll work on a psychology research project OR he’ll find a psychology research job in another city.

All as a precursor to graduate school in psychology.

Swarthmore ‘07 Political Science. My newly minted grad (as of yesterday!) will spend the summer chillin’ and then it’s off to the Univ. of Chicago in the fall to begin a Ph.D. program in Poly. Sci.

Stanford '06 Economics major, Computer Science minor. My son is working unbelievably long hours and learning an unbelievable amount as an analyst in investment banking at the same office where he did a summer internship after his junior year. These analyst positions are a two year commitment, and interviewing for the next positions which begin in Summer of '08 (a year from now) is heavily underway at this time. He has just accepted an offer for an excellent job in the city where he hoped to relocate for after his current commitment is finished.

Son, Art studio and art history, Williams 07. Just dropped him off at his summer sublet in Boston. When he met one of his new roommates I think he was surprised himself when he said he was a Williams GRAD versus student.

He’s going to be working for a medium sized architecture firm. He’s familar with their designs and so far really excited about the work environment. The plan is to get an inside look at the profession before deciding whether to go back for a masters of architecture. The museum field still beckons so it’s going to be a tough decision.

It was interesting to me to talk to the kids at graduation; very few were going directly to graduate school. We had peace corps, teach for America, Wall Street, Washington, environmental projects, research positions and entry level jobs all over the map – plus a few still looking and/or hibernating at home – but not so many that were making an immediate graduate or professional school commitment.

Daughter (Dartmouth '04, Genetics) took a year off after graduation for a research position at Univ.Chicago. She’s currently finishing the second year of her MD/PhD program at Northwestern, and studying her tooshie off for the board exams in mid June - will start work on her PhD this fall.

Son (Cornell '07 - Electrical Engineering) will be starting grad school at Cornell for MS in the fall. He will be doing an internship with a really great company in the Boston area this summer.

Good grief, these kids are amazing. I feel like I’ve accomplished nothing compared to them!!

Or is it just that those with awesome things to report are the ones reporting??

S1, UPenn grad 2005, economist with Bureau of Labor Statistics, living in DC, and spending paychecks on car repairs and new guitars (now has 5 - last I heard.)

Long term plans are to try to get into State Dept and go into foreign service.

Son (CS, Stanford 07) will travel abroad for a few weeks, then starts working at Google. Will probably continue for Masters or PhD eventually.

S (Amherst '05, Majors: Theater, Music) next performs as “Clarin” in Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s “Life Is A Dream” in midtown Manhattan, June 4-28:

D (Oberlin '07, Major: Religion, Minor: Art) is spending her first month as a graduate performing in OCircus, which will tour 5 cities (Cleve, Detroit, Bos, NYC, Richmond). Enjoys saying, “I graduated college, then ran away to join the circus.” Rest of summer she’ll unpack her boxes sitting in my living room, chill, and improve some life skills (driving! cooking!). Then to Providence, RI for a year of creative pursuits coupled with a “day job” not yet found (hopefully, teaching Hebrew or something). Will contemplate which grad school program is for her. In sum, she needs a year to take stock of things before pushing on; has been in school since age 4. Needs to determine how to set herself up to work in the arts (graphic novels, theater, etc). Heart, head, hands and pocketbook must all come together. She’s dazzling and will figure things out.

D- (Reed '06- Biology) was interested in doing more technical writing ( she had helped to write a LaTeX manual as part of her workstudy job)
Last summer- she stayed @ Reed doing something along those lines-then worked for about 6 months doing tech support at a company that provides outsourced support for various applications and systems.
I believe what she is doing now is free-lance tech editing work- a bit for Microsoft , but I don’t really know how she is finding the work.

She hasn’t asked for money- although she knows we don’t have much, I hope she knows we would help more if we knew how- but she is really enjoying living with two friends from Reed ( she only had a roommate- one year @ college and that was in a two bedroom townhouse- which I think was double the size of this place  ), although their schedules are irregular.

I have suggested to her that attending grad school while her sister is in college would be a plus!

But things seem to be going well- although no medical ins. She loves Portland, has a low key enough schedule that she took two weeks in early spring to visit friends in Pittsburgh, NYC & Chicago, and was able to visit us all weekend for Memorial Day. :D

Seems like the CC brood is just as impressive out of college as they were in HS! Congrats to you all on your wonderul, amazing children and please forgive the hideous typos in thee first post–apparently, I should be barred from typing at 2 AM!

S, Northwestern 2006, spent 9 months at home bartending and tutoring. Now is teaching English in China for a year. He is having lots of adventures. Plans to look for film/sound editing job at NYC post-production company on his return.

S, Harvard 2002/2006, took leave of absence from school after 1 1/2 years to start interactive music recommendation software company. Returned to classes after 2 1/2 year absence. Now working hard on his company and is financially independent – yay!

Daughter, Principia College 2007 (just graduated Sunday!), with degrees in Education and Sociology. She’ll work as an art director at a summer camp and then it’s off to teach English in China for a year. How’s that for a coincidence ^, 3boysnjmom?! Daughter is looking for a little more travel adventure before finding a permanent location.

Daughter '07 Cornell. Home for a month then off to Boston to start a two-year psychology research assistantship at Mass. General. She is very excited and is firming up plans to live with two other C. grads near Harvard Square.
