so why do people find "The Big Bang Theory" so great?

Almost everything in your thread is false. Don’t make comments like this when you watched parts of one or two episodes (seemingly that’s what you did)

I am “non-techie” and love it. Have watched it from the very beginning as my son’s AP Physics teacher told his students to watch it as an assignment! Husband and both sons are engineers but really not like any of the characters on the show. But I still love it and look forward to it every Thursday. We like Two Broke Girls too, colorado_mom.

Am I the only one on the thread that noticed the major shift away from the basis of the show, i.e. the geeky theme’ over to the simplistic ‘sex/relationship theme’ much like most other sitcom shows of 20s/30s people? It’s moved away from the techie/science/engineering aspects.

The reason I don’t like the show anymore is because of that shift - I liked the geek related jokes.

You mean not everyone celebrates pi day?

We’ve been celebrating it for years, plus, it’s a good excuse to have a pie.

I was hospitalized at Wellness for 11 days at one point and had to endure many episodes because that’s what one guy in the rec room wanted to watch. (There was DVR.)

I’m a big fan of the show and have watched all episodes more than a couple times over. Having paid my dues, I’m lobbying for Sheldon and Penny to get together. Sorry Amy and Leonard, but they have the chemistry. Also it’s going to take someone other than Amy to unlock Sheldon’s libido. Penny’s the girl to do it.

I think Sheldon and Penny would be a terrible combination. One of the things I like about the show is that it is really, well, real. That mash-up is far from real.

Yeah, Leonard and Penny are believable. Sheldon and Penny would not be.

I love the show as well. I like that the smart people are celebrated, even find it funny how Sheldon looks down on Howard for not having his phd, and Leonard who isn’t pure physics. How sweet when they all held hands as they watched Howard go into space?

Their characters have all evolved and I’m glad they brought the women in to round them out a little bit and let the characters grow.

I really like the relationship between Penny and Sheldon. I love Sheldon’s mother. Sheldon can make you laugh, then feel a little heartbroken for him too.

My friend is friends with the person who writes the boards and is the consultant on the science part of it. All of that is real, changes every episode and the science is all legit from what I understand.

One of my fave’s - the scene where Raj and Sheldon are working together staring at a board of a math problem with the music from I think Rocky playing in the background.

Re: Penny and Leonard- I think the relationship is kind of sad. He follows her like a puppy dog, which I believe is irksome to her. In an odd way since Sheldon is able to factor out her sex appeal, he is a far more even match for Penny. Also both Penny and Sheldon are more than a bit self centered, making in a weird way a good match of selfish people?

Ok, so, evita… just to get this straight, you want them to tackle mental illness, multiple creative outlets, etc all in a thirty minute COMEDY show? Just for clarification. Is this right?

I think they do a great job of educating viewers about Asperger’s through the Sheldon character. I doubt Sheldon could respect a woman with fewer intellectual chops than Amy’s. He clearly does have feelings for her.

I don’t think it’s necessary to argue about TV. Discuss sure, but argue no.

To give a bit of perspective, shows are shot weekly. The standard with a half hour is 3 shooting, 1 “hiatus”. The writers don’t have the scripts for the season done when they start. They are working to get them done as the year goes on. That has an effect. They don’t have much rehearsal. They do a read and the scripts are converted to shooting scripts so each department can get ready what is needed, from new sets or weird objects or finding a bird that will sit on a window sill. All that stuff goes on in the background. They block out the camera movements. They shoot all the bits that need to be done before the main taping day - meaning some guest shots, locations, etc. And every shooting week they put on a show in front of an audience with network execs and food and worry over every line, fiddle with things and still try to make something people want to watch. We see the handful of people on screen and can imagine the camera operators but there are dozens and dozens and dozens of people and steps involved.

When they brought in the Amy character, it was supposed to be 1 off with maybe some more guest shots. But they found they had material. You always need material. So sure it changes things when Howard starts acting like a person but that creates more material.

I contrast this with a show like Mad Men or frankly any of the short run series that cable has. With those shows you have a wealth of material that you cut down, down, down to specific story lines and episodes. But on a weekly show with 24 or so episodes, you need to crank it out. You find a bit that works and keep it going, so Sheldon’s obsession with laundry becomes an obsession about how his Chinese takeout is delivered to anything he does. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have him recite the number of steps it takes him on average to walk to the cafeteria and wonder if the difference (of 2 or 3) means he’s developing a neurological condition that shortens his stride. You’ve made Rajesh afraid to talk to women so you torture him: give him a drug that makes him take off his clothes in public, have him realize he’s drinking non-alcoholic beer, etc. You have to crank out the scripts.

[I can think of only one show that probably had its scripts all done before shooting and that was My 3 Sons back in the 1960’s. That was because Fred MacMurray insisted all his scenes be shot at once, no matter when they’d appear in the season. So they’d shoot all his stuff day after day and then shoot every other scene for the year. They had to get those scripts nearly done to do that]

I think it’s interesting how many people were brought over from Roseanne. I loved Roseanne growing up so maybe that’s part of why I like BBT so much.

Me, too. I enjoy watching the show but I was also surprised it is so popular. Maybe the country is becoming geeky, moving away from jocks? Good thing if true. I heard enough about steroids, scandals, huge compensations.

sosomenza - I agree with you about Amy and Sheldon. They look frustrated lovers incapable of reaching out.

Then it’s hard to understand how you think this:

The show is filled with female PhDs and doctors (Bernadette, Amy, Leslie, Leonard’s mother, Stephanie, Elizabeth), grad students (Abby and Martha, Alex, Ramona), and other professionals (lawyer Priya, dentist Lalita, the FBI agent).

If a fraternity had a BBT themed party would they be punished for insensitivity, racism and sexism?

That said, I love the show.

Love this show. It makes me laugh out loud. I think it is the best written show on TV.

Although Penny does not have the IQ of the others, she provides the EQ in many situations.

Anyone know why all the folks from Roseanne keep showing up here? Is it just Johnny Galecki or is there some other link between the 2 shows?

My family LOVES this show! Five kiddos and 4 of them are all geeks, STEM majors…now engineers and doctors and scientists.

But more than that its all the “inside” movie references, tv shows, games and toys. My kids are Star Wars, Star Trek, sci fi freaks. And I would know this as they are MY freaks.

The dissing on new Battlestar, the loving of Serenity, attending Comi-con, playing PS3 and x-box. One sons dream is to end up flying in deep space, who doesn’t want to do that???

The one in med school still has his action figures of Spidey, Batman, TMNT and he and his brothers know ALL the lines from ALL the movies. They all still like Justice league and argue DC vs. Marvel. Daughter who gets to do orthopedic surgeries on all sorts of animals every day still has hello kitty “stuff”!!! Just like Penny, everything in PINK.

Boys also know all the lines from Top Gun and can’t go a day without hearing one of them! They can spend hours arguing over Star Wars vs. Back to the Future vs. Indiana Jones…and on to Aliens! And is Voyagers capt. better than TNG?

And yep they do play paintball, getting their private pilot’s license and unfortunately all have a need to drive VERY fast! They were all high school athletes and went on to be D1 college athletes. So having a show that addresses their very inner core nerdiness has proven to be a great comedic avenue for them. Another way they can all relate to each other.

So many of their friends their age have not seen the movies they have, same hobbies or interests so when they were able to find “their” people in college it really made them feel so not alone while being so far from their family…a family close enough to finish each other sentences.

Younger son in med school, when asked to describe him is like Sheldon meets Worf.

Kat
ps we are all HUGE fans of the A-Team and Air Wolf!
and Stargate, and The Last Starfighter and Iron Eagle…

I LOVE this show! I love the jokes, that are only funny if you are a STEM type of person. I laugh out loud sometimes, and my husband, a poli sci major, doesnt get what is so funny.

Because they’re all from caltech :)
