Sochi 2014

Oh gosh… lol

How did Jeremy Abbott make the team? According to the commentators he normally melts down in all his international competitions. They said it multiple times… So sad for his teammates.

bookworm, it’s my H, two of my Ds and their significant others who are going this time. I won’t be there! They leave early next week and are going with hockey friends to mainly watch the hockey competition, although they’ll see a few other events while there. A lot of the NHL players are not taking their families and friends this time but some still are so the trip is still on. I can’t say that I won’t be worried while they’re there.

Romani-
re: the toilet flushing:
Apparently the plumbing isnt working correctly in several hotels, and guests were advised not to wash their face with the tap water! :open_mouth: Photos of the water look like brake fluid

Oh wow!

OH wait I did hear something about this. Apparently the water was uh “beer” colored?
Seems like quite the debacle.

According to the “newsfeed” from my friend, both the Russian and the American media report about the same problems with the village, which means there are REAL problems!

Darn Plushenko! Such a great performance for an old guy with multiple knee and back surgeries. Really disappointed about Jeremy’s performance.

You’re being facetious, right? I’ll spell it out for you: C-O-R-R-U-P-T-I-O-N

1/3 was spent on payouts.

This is in the Olympic charter.
I used to think the Olympics brought out the best in nations, but between the corruption and the human rights violations- not so much.

<a href=“Google doodle points to Olympic Charter in defending all athletes - CSMonitor.com”>http://m.csmonitor.com/USA/Sports/2014/0206/Google-doodle-points-to-Olympic-Charter-in-defending-all-athletes</a>

Why can’t I preview text on my iphone like I used to be able to do?

Every Olympics has its problems, but I’m amazed at how out of touch the Russians seem to be with world opinion.

Do they really not understand how the rest of the world would react to their homophobia? Or the killing of stray dogs? Or (if it’s true – and it’s hard to believe) the idea that they have security cameras in the bathrooms?

There’s a nice, not-very-subtle Sochi Google doodle today, by the way.

IMO, corruption probably accounts for 70% of the overspending. The remaining, as the link posted by EK shows, are losses due to incompetence and plain stupidity.

Okay, CNBC just reported that a Ukrainian flight was hijacked - the hijacker demanded to turn the plane to Sochi; instead, the flight proceeded to Istanbul. A dude in the second row on a Ukrainian plane… Terrorist? Nope. A drunk idiot, most likely!

I’m looking forward to watching the opening ceremonies tonight. The ballet sounds wonderful.

The photos of the ceremony posted on the Yahoo sports page are incredible. Hope the real thing lives up to the pics!

CNN reporting that a possible hijacking was averted and the flight was intercepted and landed in Istanbul.

Loved the commentary last night about Abbot: “This is… a disastrous performance.”

And good old NBC being the only broadcaster in the world to not air the Opening Ceremony live. Thankfully I found a BBC stream. I actually liked it a lot.

I watched the replay of the Moguls qualification last night and I’m pretty impressed with NBC’s online player. It doesn’t have a play/pause button and you can’t skip around anywhere. That’s exceptional design.

I wish that NBC would not pretend that they are broadcasting live when they are taped. Everything is introduced and commented on as if we are idiots… what’s the harm in saying “now we will show you what happened earlier today” instead of “the competition is about to start”?

And I miss the old days from my childhood when we would see a lot more sports and a lot less commentary and “color” pieces… it was fun to see the enthusiasm of the competitors who know they had no chance of winning but competed for love of the sport and the Olympic games. Now we only see the top contenders.

some of the players have been posting on FB throughout. CSI, thanks for the hint to turn to BBC.

For those of you who are able to access CBC, their coverage is on 24 hours a day, on five different channels.
