Solvency?

Can any body tell me if one requires to send the solvency(bank statements) to universities along with the application. Most universities don’t offer aid to int’l students and require that students have money during their stay in the university. Isn’t one supposed to show solvent funds when one is applying for visa?

And

If one does show(by stretching his resources) that he has the required first year sum for universities that don’t offer aid, how can he expect to get need based aid from universities that do offer N.B Aid to int’l?

well that depends on the university itself. i am an international student myself. i applied to cornell and stony brook. cornell’s fees are way too high for me, so i had to apply for financial aid and had to send them the CSS profile from Collegeboard. For Stony Brook, however, who require students to certify that they will be able to bear the full cost of attendance, and does not require students to submit the CSS profile, you can go ahead and show them your bank statements and savings and stuff so they know you can support yourself. If you’re a good student, you will be eligible for scholarships and you can get an on-campus job during the first year as well. so that should help you out.

so mainly it’s a question of whether universities want to see the CSS profile, in my opinion.

well most universities I am applying to (GaTech, for eg.) don’t ask specifically for any bank statements but my school counselor says that its a good idea to send them. So, if I do show the funds to no FA aid providing universities by tightly stretching the resources, won’t that be seen by universities such as Harvard as E.F.C leading to no offer of aid?

but the point is, will harvard get to know whether you can fully support the cost of attendance at georgia tech? harvard is one of the few schools in the US that offers full need-based aid to internationals regardless of the amount that students can support themselves with. i guess they need the CSS profile for that. but if georgia tech does not require CSS, you might as well show them that you can support yourself. that would not have any bearing on the amount of aid you receive from harvard.

Georgia Tech does not provide ANY aid for internationals, just so you know.

true that.

There’s nothing you can do about it. If your resources, stretched or otherwise, are sufficient to afford the whole fee, Harvard will spot that anyway. You really can’t manipulate your income documents or E.F.C. to suit each college’s aid policy, since it’s the college which decides the actual E.F.C anyway.

@Tintin - So you’re an Indian studying in Belgium? Isn’t that ironic, considering your username? :D

@rsaxena - hahaha yea i guess so :D

you dont need to send ANY documents to GAtech-the proof of finances needs to be sent post acceptance-when you get your I20

Yes, nothing at all. Completely online application, since you’ll have to do the FCE for the academic transcript.
