I am certainly not here to sell AmEx, everyone should read the fine points to see if the insurance makes sense for them.

A young guy roaming the world doesn’t need to be stalked:

I “stalked” my daughter while she was riding her bike across the country. There are a lot of applications that allow you to track a cell phone, and I used one of them. It eased my mind greatly, and my daughter was nice enough to allow it.

Many of the people who blog about their cycling adventures post their location automatically or post their daily Garmin map.

My 50 something friend will be sailing around the world with her H. They started a blog. When asked why, they said because their moms want to know what they are doing (or alive).

My 21 year old son seems to have caught the same ‘bug’. He’s still got a year to go to finish his STEM degree but he’s already talking about taking some time to ‘find himself’ (my words, not his). He vacillates between being anti-establishment and wanting to have all the good things in life. Personally, I think he’s just confused. At this age it’s really hard to know exactly what you want to do and what kind of lifestyle you want to lead. I think this generation is not as enamored with the whole concept of all work, no play but make lots of money and have lots of ‘things’ as our generation was - remember when people aspired to be Yuppies.

It drives my CPA husband mad to hear son talk like this but I admire my son in a lot of ways for having this attitude. So many people simply follow the script of a conventional life and end up at our age wishing they had made different choices. I never put much thought into it at his age but if I had to do it over again…
