Do we know whether possible/practical for a Sophie Davis student to apply to other medical schools once they complete their BS?
This is a question that you should pose to the admissions office since I’m not sure if this is possible. However, I’m going to stick my neck out and say no because the BS in Biomedical Sciences from Sophie Davis is specifically designed for entry into the CUNY School of Medicine. This is because the program begins teaching basic medical sciences (anatomy, fundamentals of organ systems, and early clinical exposure) in U3, the final year of the BS degree. However, from a practical perspective, I’m not sure why you would. In Sophie Davis, you already have been granted admission to a medical school. I’m not sure why you would want to go through several hundred hours of intensive MCAT prep and the whole med school admissions process.
Hello friends, my daughter was accepted to this program, but she just heard that the retention rate of this program is very low. There are about 65-85 freshman but only around 30-40 students graduate at year 7. It is a big concern for us. Is it true? Thanks.
Yes. There is an attrition rate. This is a very challenging 7-year program that is heavily science-based (unlike other programs where you can major in a non-science major and be a part of the BS/MD program). Students who are not able to complete the courses with a grade of C or better are allowed to improve their grade by retaking the course over the summer or the following academic year. Since the curriculum is progressive and requires you to complete basic courses before going to more advanced coursework, it is possible that a student can be held over to the next year. Students are required to have a 3.3 science GPA and a 3.5 cumulative GPA by the end of the 3rd undergraduate year to progress to the 1st year medical school curriculum (this is a new requirement beginning with the current 1st year class). Previously, the requirement was a 3.2 cumulative GPA. If a student is struggling despite being given the opportunities for remediation, then a student can be dismissed from the program. In some cases, students opt not to continue in the program on their own after completing a few semesters because they find it too challenging academically or they feel they can no longer continue because of personal reasons.

Hi! I’m very interested in applying but I had questions on the recommendation letters. I know that you need 5 recommendation letters, but does the guidance counselor count as one? Also, do you think I have a chance with my stats?

Yes, the guidance counselor letter counts as one letter. Then you will need one math, one science, one person outside of school, and one teacher of your choice. The stats are good but I would work on the SAT verbal score. The activities are good. From your activities, it’s obvious you’re a very talented musician, and that demonstrates a lot of dedication and hard work. For the community service, I would specify what you did for the 300 hours. Are any of these hours related to healthcare? Think about how your experiences contributed to your interest in becoming a physician and how your activities and personal beliefs relate to the mission of the Sophie Davis Program. This will help you prepare to write the 3 essays for the Sophie Davis application.
