Sophomore - Class Registration Advice?

It’s that time of year again - class registration. You know how it goes.

I’m a little conflicted when it comes to choosing classes, however. I’m currently very passionately involved in chorus, which takes up two of the three slots I have of classes to choose. It’ll be counting as honors credits next year, which is nice I suppose. I really love chorus a lot, and it so happens that I’m doing really well in it. (Not to toot my own horn, but I’ll be entering a solo competition this spring, an opportunity very rarely offered to freshmen. So it’s not like I’m not accomplishing stuff in that field!)

The problem is filling that final slot.

I’ve completed two courses of Latin, which means I qualify for a four year university, but they tend to like more than two. I don’t really care for Latin at all, though. That’s an option though.
My second option is an AP, Human Geography. My counselor says that it’s a good one for sophomores to begin with, and I love the class’s teacher, which is a plus.
My third option would be some kind of Career/Technical course, of which I have none. Do I need to have one? It would probably be animal science honors if I chose to go with one.

Which should I go with? I’m leaning toward AP Human Geo but I need to know if that’s impractical or not.
(If it helps, I took math I and latin I in 8th grade, so I’m a little bit ahead of the game and might have some extra space in my senior year for some stuff.)

I say take Latin again. You don’t need AP Human Geo, and many colleges are starting to look to 3-4 years of foreign language. 2 is the bare minimum for some schools, so it’s best to at least continue it for one more year. You don’t need to do 4 years of it, but 3 years is sufficient enough for a good school. 2 is eh.

You don’t need a career or technical course to get into college unless it’s a graduation requirement or stated as a requirement at a school/schools your interested in. But if you do choose to take it, take it junior or senior year so you have room for Latin in your sophomore schedule.

I assume you have a math, science, english and social studies. I agree with h*annah…take Latin…ideally you get to Latin 4. AP Human Geo is less necessary than Foreign Lang.

Agreed. AP Human Geography is one of the easiest AP’s (along with Environmental Science). Many colleges see it as either a freshman AP course or an AP that people take just for the sake of having an extra AP course. The third year of Latin would look much better (also, learning Latin helps tangentially with comprehension in other courses, lol). You don’t need to go to year 4 and beyond if you strongly dislike it.

Latin III. Stopping at level 2 will bar you from many, many 4-year colleges.
A top College for strong vocal musicians is St Olaf. Look into it.

Thank you all for your input! I’ve decided to go with Latin III but I am considering self-studying for an AP or two to compensate.
@MYOS1634 - Thank you for the school suggestion, I’ll take a look!

You don’t need to compensate, your schedule is totally fine
