Southern Methodist University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admission

Same thing.

My daughter got deferred, which is not a surprise as she has a 3.24 GPA, due to undiagnosed learning disability and personal issues. She retook 3 classes over the summer and got all As- AP Biology semesters 1 and 2, and Geometry. She is OOS and applied to sports business, Deadman. What do you think her chances are with submitting senior grades and adding extracurriculars? Any advice? She has not done an interview so maybe that would help. Any advice would be helpful! Congrats to everyone who got in! Such an amazing accomplishment!!

Does the Portal page have tons of references to class of 28 stuff for anyone else? :sob: that made me laugh

Good chance considering rigor and upward trend.
Please stay hopeful and maintain contact with the AO.
Best of luck! I’m rooting for your kid

My child was accepted today w/20k per year scholarship, very grateful!

Besides the money they included in today’s acceptance, will there be more opportunities to get merit money?

Thank you so much!! Did your child do an interview?

I’m not even aware that SMU has interviews as admission criteria. We didn’t do any.

Has anyone who was admitted with ED received merit? My son was admitted with no merit and others I know with ED also received no merit. The website says that merit wouldn’t be decided until January but tonight it seems like a lot of EA admits were told about money in their decision letters…

I believe need based aid will be communicated in January or later.
Most of merit aid is communicated with admit letters. There could be additional merit offered later as many folks who’re offered withdraw their apps, beyond their expected yield.
Not everyone in EA is offered merit.
One downside of ED is that schools don’t need to offer you any merit to sweeten the deal; they know you’d accept the offer. But then, it greatly improves your admission odds.

Students are notified of any SMU academic merit awards with their university admission decision. If your ED or EA offer letter does not mention an award then you did not receive one. Dedman, Cox and Meadows offer departmental scholarships which are determined later (Meadows for example in March/April) but they are typically smaller awards.

D25 was accepted yesterday.3.98UW/4.17W, 32, Eagle Scout, 4-year athlete. 30K annual merit / Provost Scholarship.

Do all of the colleges have additional merit aid they release later?

I haven’t seen the letter yet. Wondering if there is an admitted students day.

daughter got in with 30k/yr provost scholarship. applied for arts and sciences. good gpa, research papers and science fair, varsity athlete, lot of volunteering and activities

There are multiple admitted students programs in the spring that you can attend… information is usually sent out after winter break time.

If you want to seek more merit aid, apply for the presidents or hunts scholarship due Jan 15 as both cover a significant portion of the COA

I’ve seen a lot of acceptance letters from several universities over the years (from my own kids and friends). I must say, the added personalized touch that SMU adds to their acceptance letter is pretty special. Something that you don’t get at these large, public universities. You really get the sense that their admissions staff actually read the applications and don’t just rely on numbers (GPA/SAT). I hope they continue this tradition because it is just another example of the type of learning environment that I want my student to be a part of. If you don’t know what I am talking about, it’s the last sentence of the second full paragraph.

Cannot agree more. One of the most thoughtfully drafted admit letters.
