Southern Methodist University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admission

Congratulations to your daughter on acceptance! Mine applied Studio Art/Advertising too!!! Also, we received no merit. Hopefully there will be artistic merit awarded but those decisions are not notified until end March/April!

Congrats to yours as well! I’m wondering if they weren’t as generous with merit for Meadows students, because there would most likely be given $ in the spring.

I found this table of art/aid packages. Average art merit is pretty low. But almost every art student will get some artistic merit!

My daughter is going to contact her SMU admissions officer after Christmas to clarify the major situation. One of her main reasons for wanting to go to SMU was to major in both studio art and advertising.

Not awesome, but it’s something!

Anyone know when Discovery scholarships go out?

Does anyone know if/when department scholarships for Lyle Engineering go out? Since it’s not a direct admit, I’m wondering if they give to incoming freshman. Also- did anyone get the email saying we were extremely impressed with your application and have identified you as a potential candidate for further SMU scholarship opportunities and to apply to Presidential? It didn’t say anything about any other scholarships. Just wondering if they sent that to everyone or if maybe she has a shot

What did it say? My D25’s said they were impressed with how she juggled academics with a wide range of ECs which I thought maybe was a generic statement - but what I will say is after our first tour she received multiple handwritten follow up letters from the department to her encouraging her to apply when she was a senior (we toured as a junior) and I thought that was extremely impressive. I was on a business trip and I ran into someone with an SMU sweatshirt and I stopped her and let her know my daughter was applying - the woman worked for the school and she just went on and on about how much the school truly cares about its students and its not for show - you could tell she loved working there.

I got the same email both about the Presidential and from Dedman

Ok -they didn’t mention Dedman but probably because she will be in Lyle, however they didn’t mention Lyle. I was wondering why they didn’t mention Hunt

What letter did you get from Dedman? We received an email from Dedman explaining all of the different opportunities. But nothing about major, merit, or DCS.

I got an email invitation to apply to the Dedman Scholars program, which (if selected) awards 15k in merit

Yes, but it is very competitive.

Weird. That’s putting the cart before the horse.

Yeah, I’m stunned we weren’t offered merit either.

My son is a freshman at SMU/Cox, BBA Scholar and UHP and loves it. He is in CAP program (Career Accelerator Program) and has an internship lined up for next summer (as do the majority of his friends). I agree that the school is what you make it but Cox provides a ton of support and opportunities - my son goes to career seminars, has coffee chats, etc. with mentors and business leaders at least once a week. Started working on resume day 1 as part of mandatory Cox class for first years. Student life is very active and Dallas nightlife is expensive (access to lots of clubs, etc) which was a big lifestyle shift from home. That (not necessarily the nightlife - just the change/difference from home) was something he wanted in his college experience so that has been a plus for him. Definitely a TON of money at SMU. The kids who are in Cox (esp BBA scholars) are all pretty similarly motivated (most of my son’s friends have summer internships lined up already) and there are a lot of opportunities for that if you pursue them.

From what I’ve heard from my son and friends at SMU it’s possible but unlikely. Very competitive.

Where did you see/find this stat?

Thanks for your insight! You may not know the answer to this question but I’m wondering if you think Cox is worth it if you’re NOT a BBA scholar? I’m assuming that if my son makes it into Cox it will be just Business Direct and we were wondering if there’s a big divide between the two groups?

Son received acceptance and NO Merit. His other acceptances thus far all came with Merit but he has been most excited for SMU. Any insight to how it works if initially no merit scholarship was given?
