Southern Methodist University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admission

would make sense-- no app fee this year

The last few years, SMU ED decisions have been released the first Friday in December and EA decisions a week later. Praying that will be true this year!

SMU received almost 5,000 more applications in the ED/EA round this year. Given total applications last year were just over 15,000 for all rounds this is a huge increase!

Where did you hear or read this? Thanks

SMU president said EA/ED applications were up 40%, but that is for applications that are 1st round ED and EA. Most SMU applications aren’t even submitted (such as ED2/EA2 and regular decision). At the end of the entire admissions cycle for the last few years, SMU has received about 15k applications. So the number of actual 1st round ED/EA applications is way smaller than 5000. As a percentage, its still a big jump for ED/EA
SMU is a hot school right now for sure.

Reported ED 1 and EA applications were almost 5,500 - so if applications are up 40% then prior year was just below 4,000.

Any informal guidance given yet on timing of EA announcements. And does anyone know if those that received ‘direct admittance’ invitation in common app have a different timeline (I doubt it but am just curious as I cannot find info on it). Thanks and good luck everyone!

I asked same question about Common App to admissions and was told timelines were exact same. Based on threads from previous year they are like clockwork and come out on or within a day or two of 12/15. Good luck!

I was wondering if EA may hear next Thursday, a week after ED heard, does anyone know how long they wait to release EA after the ED’s went out?

ED decisions came out yesterday! Our daughter is got in! Best of luck to everyone!

Anyone have any insight into how much SMU weighs legacy status irl? It seemed like a great idea when my student wanted to apply to my Alma mater, but now I’m stressing that he won’t get in (strong student but not stellar student) and it will always be a point of friction.

The CDS says it’s considered.

Let’s say your student doesn’t get in. Ok - it happens. That’s why you have a balanced list.

Full pay helps. ED helps if you did. Legacy helps.

Why worry ? You can’t control it.

Worst case, he finds another school that he loves, starting a new family legacy.

Thanks! And congratulations to you as well! We didn’t get any word on scholarships.

Congratulations everyone that got in! Super exciting!
I wonder when EA’s will hear anything

By 15th so I assume it will be Friday or earlier

Why do you think it will be by the 15th?

If you look back on each thread over the last few years thats the date or if it lands on a weekend the Friday before. Their website said mid December.

The suspense is challenging lol. Was there any lead notification when they did ED’s last week?

My daughter got a heads up email the day of - around noon. The actual decision came out at 8PM. Both are eastern time. Wishing your child great luck.
