After four years the big day is coming for our older UVA student. I was wondering if anyone who has been to one can tell me what parents usually wear to Final Exercises on the Lawn. I’m thinking business casual, but don’t want to be the only person without a tie or jacket. And how about the ladies - dresses or slacks? Forecast is for low 80’s.

Last year I think the plurality of men wore blazers – most everyone at least wore a tie – you might feel out of place without one. Most women wore dresses. Many women also carried umbrellas because it was very easy to get sunburned sitting on the Lawn or elsewhere for the individual school/department diploma presentations. But put them away during the actual ceremonies, please. Bring water.

Women can do either dress slacks/skirts/dresses. Don’t go too over the top in either direction (formal or casual).

Most parents try to look nice (lots of picture-taking going on) but they’re not too dressed up. Business casual, or clean polo shirt and slacks, etc. should be fine. And it’s a big, happy, nonjudgmental crowd, so if you miss the mark one way or another nobody is going to care.
