Spending freeze February

@BunsenBurner reminds me. Sigh. We have spent $200+ this month for different antennas for “free” tv, but I’ll be damned if I ever give DirecTV another dime.

I knew rural America got #$#( when digital tv was enacted. Apparently, living in the middle of town isn’t much better, because there is too much interference.

The other hunt is for a very large lampshade for an antique lamp with a reflector bowl, so no harp lampshades. OMG…so expensive. Forget mindless spending, my mindful spending isn’t doing well in February :frowning: On a good note, my mindless spending is ok!

@sryrstress

We are watching the Olympics on NBC…antenna in the attic only. We live in the boondocks. Our reception is better than when we had cable. Hang in there!

We got a $25 pancake antenna off Amazon and $100 antenna from Lowes. Can’t see the difference. So $25 antenna won.

Found hiking boots for our big trip. Full price was $170 per pair. Bought last year’s colors during the holiday weekend sale for $100 each instead. Planning to take more active vacations so we will use these beyond this trip.

Decided that Athleta didn’t have on sale what I really needed. My H has been looking for new ski clothes and I mentioned that Patagonia was having a sale. He likes Spyder brand and they also were having a sale. He has a few items coming. They were definitely a need for him. He is extremely frugal and would not have purchased if he didn’t need them and if they weren’t on sale.

February is definitely the month to buy winter clothes. Like the end of August is the best time to pick up summer stuff. Sometimes, artificial frugality can be detrimental to one’s budget when there is a real need.

Yes, I definitely prefer to buy good warm clothing at great prices when I need it. That IS mindful spending as well.

Mindless spending led to profit this morning. DH likes to Goodwill shop in the winter. It’s amazing the high quality clothes he finds in great condition. I think the men’s clothing is more like that then the women’s. Tommy Bahama, Ralph Lauren, J. Crew…to name a few.

Anyway, he purchased some really nice grey jeans and we got home and he went to wash them. He comes to the kitchen laughing. There was $140 in twenties in the pocket!!!

That is great!!!

@conmama So what are you going to buy with the $140?

@raclut …LOL. It will just be put in the checking account. I spent $141 at the grocery store this morning, so I guess it will cover one week of our groceries! I guess it will cover my lotion I bought this week, and a pair of boots he bought last weekend!

I met my guy friend at the mall, to buy pillows for his couch. He told each salesperson that I was on a February freeze.

Now I have to call him and confess that I just spent $30.00. For the last few years, my cousin has given me gift certificates to a local spa. This year I said, please keep it, I hate facials and massages. I’ve said this politely before, but I’m tired of the same b/d gift. I just don’t like being pampered. Well, I had the best woman ever. Now I ponder if I tell my cuz it was good, will this gift continue? I’m sure my face needs a good cleaning and moisturizing, but do I really want to spend this $?

Well, went to Costco to cash Citi Visa rewards check— just cashed and left store without any purchases!

Read elsewhere to not get a cart when going there and sticking strictly to a shopping list to mine mine mindless purchases.

^^ I shop with a basket or fill my own cloth bag, I never get a cart!

I’m looking for some things I need for DDs wedding so I went to GW today…and son of a gun…the Athleta dress was still there. It was an omen…so I bought it!

That sounds like a good deal @thumper1 and mindful, especially since you waited to be sure you wanted it. This sounds mindful to me. Is there anything you want to dispose of or donate?

I’m trying to train DH not to say, “Hey, do you want to go grab a bite to eat?” I can control my own urges to go out, but if he suggests it, I fold. I’ve told him that a million times, but I think he’s finally getting it!

I’m a very loyal member of the “bag a week” club. We are trying very hard to reduce the amount of “stuff” we have.

Yep…I’ll be taking a bag to my charity shop on Monday.

I’m frugal but life happens. January: 1) The dryer broke. I haven’t gotten it repaired or bought a new one. I’m going to the laundromat once per week. 2) I had the dog euthanized. It was time. Then I had her cremated and splurged on the “package” in which ashes, and only hers, were returned to me. February: A nerve in one of my teeth died. Root canal!

I had an epic fail with the mindful spending. Finally went to a mall Thursday after work and found a lightweight stylish down coat with a gorgeous sumptuous hood, on sale $100. But no, I’m going to go home and go through my whole closet and see if I really need it. Get home and call my D and send a pic. She loves it and wants to use it when she goes to cold places. That’s all the validation I need:)

Return to the store next evening and it’s gone!!! Looked through every rack panicking. Go to the sales lady and she confirms that the only one in my size sold. None to be found in any other store in So Cal. OK, I’ll go home and find one on the Internet. None…nada…all sold out. Available in another color or Size Small.

Starting over again
