Splurges That Weren't Worth It

DH has wanted to give the hockey table away for years… I don’t know why I have avoided doing it. For some reason I think that once it’s gone we will miss it.

MotherofDragons is right: recovering dining room chairs is one of the easiest projects around. There are many helpful tutorials on you tube. I’ve refinished mine a couple of times: it’s enormously satisfying and packs a major visual punch.

The $250 dog stairs for the large, elderly dog so he could continue to get on our bed. He wouldn’t even consider using them. The cats like to sleep on them.

Helpful thread! Thanks, @musicprnt post #40! Had to replace our leaky Kohler faucet today. Went with Delta. (-:

@HRSMom – have you tried asking the cobbler to stretch them a little? This has given new life to some ‘too tight’ shoes I have purchased.

The fancy 36" Kitchenaid range with the high power gas burners that required a larger gas line. DH insisted It gas only been used about once a month. Meanwhile, those huge diameter and power burners are useless for regular pans.

@MomofWildChild, we had a dog ramp – not quite as expensive, but the dog wouldn’t go near it. Sold on Craigslist… probably to someone else whose dog won’t go near it now.

I did have a little qualm about the air hockey table as we dropped it off as if suddenly we would get a hankering to play once we no longer had it. It didn’t happen. I don’t miss it at all.

Count one more for both the air hockey table and the Lego Mindstorms.

DS never played with anything but his computer. When we limited screen time he just read books and played card games.

When my daughter was 4 she wanted a my size barbie for Christmas. It was truly out of the budget. She continued asking for it throughout the next year. So I saved and made sure it was under the tree the next year. It was a rapunzel barbie with a long braid. She took the braid off her head and literally never played with the barbie, the doll got stuffed in the closet.

DS#1 loved Lego mindstorm! Then again, he is an engineer. My current not worth it splurge is our trainer. Time for a change, I suppose.

The antique closet to hang up coats by the front entrance. Looks beautiful but winter coats do not fit in it. We now have an Ikea coat rack next to it. What were we thinking!

@jym626 I would love to have a personal trainer.

Hey—I’ll take an air hockey table! We had one growing up, and it was in pretty frequent use. Of course, I come from an insanely competitive family but with widely disparate talent sets among the siblings, and that was one way we could compete on a reasonably level field, so that might be why.

Another air hockey table family. It is in our pool room and my nephews play it once a year. It needs to go but it is out of sight and we put it off. It’s not an easy item to get rid of.
Roomba- it worked great but kept breaking.Linens and Things replaced it twice. When it last died Linens and Things was long gone.
I also bought my S a Smartpen. It went to college with him, came back later in the same box. I finally gave it away. When D2 went to college her disabilities department issued her a Smartpen. I paid for the notebooks. She never used it. At least I was only out the notebooks.

A day trip to EPCOT for 6 people last year. Apparently, with Disney’s new Fastpass system, unless you are lodging at a Disney resort and make your Fastpass reservation months in advance, you will be locked out and won’t be able to ride any of the premium attractions without standing on line for 2 or more hours.

Wow! While I understand that to be a great benefit for people planning trips months in advance, that’s a drag for those who just decide to go spur of the moment. They should limit the number of those available.

I had never heard of it…but I’m sure I will once it hits Disneyland!

I found this on the Disneyland website:

They do limit them, and you don’t need to be staying at a Disney resort to utilize Fast Pass. All you need to do is to purchase a ticket. You can then make them 30 days ahead, or 60 days ahead if you’re staying on site. FastPass is only applicable for certain attractions and you can only reserve three per day in advance. Once you’ve used up those three, you can make three more.

Like I said, this is news to me, so I’m not aware of what they do or don’t do. It sounds like they limit how many a person can get, but do they limit the number they give out? By 3boystogo’s account it sounds like they weren’t able to get any Fast Passes on that day which is a bummer. Of course, it could just be they didn’t get their early enough. I know that in CA, for busy days you have to grab your fast pass early in the day for some rides.

Disney was a splurge that wasn’t worth it to me. Overpriced and overcrowded, IMO. Ditto to the air hockey, ping-pong, pool and foosball. Glad to have all that space reclaimed. H won’t let go of the pinball machine.
