Sports Recruits

Several kids from our town (mostly private schools) have committed to UVA for a sport. Does this hurt chances for my son who definitely has all the right stats but isn’t playing a D1 sport? I’m just wondering if admissions has a cap on admitting kids from the same area.

Also, my son only took the SAT once (plus SAT subject test and ACT with writing), as he did very well and was told there would no point in retaking. In hindsight I’m wondering if a school would frown upon only seeing one test score, perhaps thinking he was lazy for not taking it again, albeit his score was great and I don’t think +20 to 30 points would have made much of a difference.

Without knowing the actual scores of both the SAT and ACT it’s hard to really answer. However, if “great” means scores in the mid-to-upper 700’s, then generally No, don’t retake them - it would be a waste of time (at least as far as UVa would be concerned). Meaning: UVa is not all about test scores, or kids who get 800s. Are you in-state or OOS? If you’re OOS and scores are in the 700s and ACT is 34 (as an example), then personally I don’t think any higher test scores will influence your son’s application at all at UVa. Now it really comes down to the rest of his application - Common app and supplemental essays, activities, GPA, rigor of HS coursework, AP classes and scores, etc. A few extra SAT points isn’t going to make a difference.

Now, if his SAT scores are mid-600s, then maybe a 2nd effort wouldn’t be a bad idea.

As for being in the same town as athletes getting offers… Don’t know on that one. But I can say that my S came from a small OOS town/small high school (330 in his class). He and another student (both in the top 5 in their class) both applied to, and were accepted to, UVa.

Best of luck to your son. But, I’m sure you know: make sure he has other school options as well.

My S came from a small OOS high school (180 in his class) and he and another student also were both accepted. (Both in top 5%) Dean J repeatedly states on this board that UVA does not have quotas or caps. That each application is reviewed holistically. Good Luck to you.
