Update: Attended a transfer information session in one of their San Antonio Offices and received a Financial Aid receipt notification. I know this does not confirm acceptance, but I am providing a heads up of potential interest.

Update 2: Went on a campus tour, College of Natural Sciences Information Session, and stopped by the Veteran Student Services office. The campus is huge. If you think about commuting to school there are plenty of bike lanes in the area. Driving within 10 miles of the city is really painfully slow. If you are considering living off campus keep that in mind. The facilities are nice and modern, for the most part, and they have two Student Union buildings that are really impressive.

The campus atmosphere reminds me of how people walk about in New York City which is both a blessing and a curse. I saw way too many students looking down at something and not toward where they were walking. It might be a new age but, with so many people walking next to you, it would help to be aware of your surroundings. Around the school there are plenty of small shops that go with the theme of “Keeping Austin weird” and it brings me back to my Syracuse days. I remember reading an article about how Syracuse barely has any fast food on their campus and I don’t remember there being any at all. UT does have fast food, but give the mom and pop shops a try to gain a wider range of tastes in the area.

Age nor incoming status aren’t major factors in participation of any programs. You can be a transfer and be a part of the Freshman Research Initiative but, of course, it will be modified as you aren’t a Freshman. Also, you can apply for the Honors Program and other programs. Im looking into an integrated Computer Science B.S./M.S. Program and, as long as you meet the requirements, you can apply for it.

Veterans admitted to UT, it would behoove you to stop by their Veteran Student Services Office. They can provide assistance with your Montgomery or Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. This will make the transition run smoothly. The office is involved with the Wounded Warrior Project, for those who are interested in volunteering with veterans. After talking with their staff I am more at ease with waiting to hear back from Admissions.

Students accepted to UT Austin, I would recommend that you visit the campus and recon the area. I tried to get lost but with a map always found where I was and knew where I was going. The campus is huge and so are the buildings. Before you get to class, find your classrooms because I had a rough time with their layout of class numbers. I’m accustomed to classroom numbers labeled as 204 or 310; however UT has it labeled as 2.402. In addition, I was riding the elevator to leave a building and pressed the “G” button thinking it was the ground floor. I ended up a floor below the ground floor and floor 1 being the ground floor. Keep that in mind.
