Spring 2015 Transfer Thread

I don’t know about the late appeal for final transcripts but your stats look really good. I know people say that UT only looks at GPA and not at the schools, but a good GPA from Cornell should get someone’s attention.

I’m just worried because of the timeline they gave me for the appeal.
But it does say the appeal is still in review, which I think means they are waiting for my transcript?
Is anyone else in this situation?

Just got accepted into Math CNS!! What should I do now? Apart from turning in my immunization record. I read earlier in the thread that transfer students weren’t required to attend orientation but its telling me that I have to in order to register.

Update: I just read through the site, and I see now that it is optional for transfer students. Also, Math was my second choice, so does this mean that I wasn’t good enough to make it into CS (first choice)?

@ivanryuu‌ Congrats! Do you mind posting your stats? Also yes it does mean you didn’t get into CS.

@savemefromsnow‌ Sorry, I dont know am I suppose to ask, but I’m curious. Why are you transferring from Cornel, what’s matter?

@ivanryuu‌ Yea, would you mind posting your stat? Credit hours, Math&Science course you taken, what did you get on those math&science, ec. Thank you

(for anyone interested in CNS Biology or any other CNS major)

@ivanryuu Hey I say its pretty good getting into CNS. I heard Computer Science is extreeeeemely impacted right now so they can only accept the most exceptional students because there are literally only a HANDFUL of spots. I was told this directly from a CNS advisor herself. Good thing I was applying for biology though.

and for those who were following me or anyone who is just interested in CNS Biology, here was my story so you won’t have to search through the pages and I hope my story helps:

I applied to UT Austin for the fall 2014. CNS Biology (first choice) COLA undeclared (second). At the time I had a 3.6 GPA, mediocre E.C, and the math and science courses I took were:

Calc 1: A
Bio 1: A
Bio 1 lab: A
Bio 2: A

I was rejected from CNS Biology but accepted into COLA undeclared. I couldn’t go to UT Austin fall 2014 because of family issues so I appealed to have my acceptance into COLA undeclared transferred until spring 2015. However, I was also planning on using my fall 2014 grades (once completed) at my current college to hopefully appeal into CNS Biology because that is legitly where I want to be. COLA undeclared would just be so off the mark for what I plan on doing with my future but I heard it was easy to get into so i put it as second choice.

A week ago when fall 2014 grades closed I submitted an appeal where I wrote why being in CNS Biology would be important for me and how it goes with my life goals. The important part, however, were obviously the math and science courses I took. So here are the classes I appealed with:

Calc 2: A
Bio 2 lab: A-
Chem 1: A-
Physics 1: A

I brought my GPA to a 3.795.

MY APPEAL got approved so I am officially a CNS Biology major. From my experience and after thoroughly searching through forums and piecing together information is this:

If you do not have any “alumni connections” or anything really special about you (ex. United states ambassador ect.) then the real meat of your application is going to be the math and science courses you have taken prior to applying to transfer. I DEFINITELY believe that they wanna see Calc 1&2 completed. No joke. If you have calc 1&2 completed, you have a VERY GOOD SHOT. I spoke directly with an advisor with this. She said that even though their external transfer page doesn’t say this, its definitely what they are looking for because calculus seems to have a high failing rate at UT so they want transfer students to already have calculus 1&2 completed so they won’t have to take it at UT. I spoke to 3 advisors and they all said the same thing. However, if you don’t you still of course have a chance. Other factors of your app are important too. I am just saying having calc 1&2, some additional science classes, and a decent GPA is basically a shoo-in.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE. sorry this was long but I just wanted to help because I know the stress as I’ve been at this for a whole year. If you want to PM me about additional questions and concerns and I am praying for all of you. Hook em’ \m/

@saammmaay‌ Any idea if CNS chemistry is harder/easier to get into?

Yes, of course. I have a 4.0 GPA with 80+ hours but according to the audit module, only about 55+ transfer (partly because I was following the CS transfer curriculum). I’ve taken Calc I, II, and III as well as Bio I and II. I also have my first physics done. I think I had decent essays. I was working as a Java EE Instructor for a semester plus I was the robotics construction leader for the school’s team with ongoing volunteering. I mentioned my individual projects which included a Rubik’s cube solver I made from scratch in Java and Matlab. And finally, I’ve taken 7 classes online all having to do with CS.

Honestly, I thought I was a strong candidate but I suppose not… It makes me curious as to what were the specs for those that did get into CS this spring.

As I know that there are many others that got accepted not long ago, how does financial aid work for us? I was accepted to other Uni’s much much earlier and they all sent me the award letter. I’m wondering if we’re still in time to receive FAFSA or we’re left on our own.

@kyotoraz Imma say roughly the same. But instead of how i had my entire bio sequence done (bio 1 bio 2 and labs) u might want the chem sequence instead. Basically most of the CNS majors are equivalent in terms of difficulty getting in. The only really hard one is CS.

@ivanryuu yeah ur stats are very impressive and I am just as shocked as u. If you can’t get in then who can uk… idk bout cs. Its just so ridiculously hard i kinda group it in impossible. But u did get accepted into CNS math so you can still take a majority of the classes needed for CS and do an internal transfer. Internally transferring within the same school is definitely easy. If you are like me who was in COLA wanting to take CNS classes, then there is a major problem cuz then i won’t be able to take a majority of the classes i wanted.

@savemefromsnow I know exactly what you are talking about when referring to appeal timeline cuz i had the same concern. For my situation, the deadline for me to send a “major change appeal” was December 17th or something but i sent mine in January 2nd or something like that XD. And my appeal got approved so I know you still have a chance. MOST LIKELY, they are waiting for your transcript and then looking over your complete application to make a final decision.

^ correct me if I am actually not talking about what you are talking about XD I thought thats what u meant

@ivanryuu‌ I am VERY curious about Financial Aid as well… Apparently tuition is due on the 16th and an admissions person I talked to said I might not find out my status until a week from today (Wednesday, the 15th)… I think I may give them another shout on the phone if nobody here knows.

Is the 15th the last day they’re accepting people?

@Yoohooos mainly transferring because I really was not prepared for dealing with the cold weather. I also didn’t visit until the summer, so I didn’t think it would be in such an isolated place. If I were majoring in something they really specialize in I would try to stay, but I’m not so there’s no reason to suffer.

@saammaay yes that’s exactly what I am talking about! the timelines are freaking me out so much, she said two weeks but I doubt I will find out before the 16th because my transcripts should get there by tomorrow, then they have to process and review my information.

I think it’s reasonable that we make a new chat for fall/summer transfers. Anyone in with me?

Okay, so I called admissions about the financial aid and they said, if you’re accepted on the 15th then you can go to financial aid office and you can apply for a loan from them until you get your financial aid money.
I asked if I could apply though the loan online or over the phone since I live quite a few hours away from Austin and she said she had no idea, but I could contact financial aid. I’ve tried calling financial aid three times, but the line is always busy.
This is their number if anyone else wants to try giving them a ring (512) 475-6282

@Kyotoraz‌ I agree! I’m in with you!

Here is the new thread, I tagged most of us here, sorry for the rest.
