@Yoohooos I think that a lot of us here are still worried about the spring semester so I’m not entirely sure the other thread applies much.
So I called the OSFS today to ask about my financial aid situation. He basically told me that he had no idea whether I would receive any help or not as they are barely processing my application. He told me that I could basically do was wait but to keep checking every day for any changes (sound familiar?). I’m probably going to have to get loans for this semester.
Also, anyone going to orientation on Monday? I know it’s not required but is it worth going? What things are discussed?
Just got to Austin and moved my stuff in today. I already LOVE the city!! Good luck for all who have not been accepted, and for the ones who have been accepted, I hope for safe travels. See y’all Monday. Hook’em!
GPA: 3.52
Hours: 30 (I applied with 18 but got the 12 during last semester)
I had one letter of recommendation and one of my essays was strong.
I have 4 years work experience in a construction firm as the head of my department and a strong resume.
I am also Hispanic, which I know helps lol.
So orientation starts tomorrow morning! Does anyone know if parents are allowed to partake in some of the activities, e.g. academic advising, fin. aid stuff? I also have an advising session with the international office early on, which will sort of overlap with the welcome meeting (but only by ~10 min).
@moonlily Hello, and congrats! There is a parent session from 8:30 to 10:30 in Burdine 112 (down the hall from our first orientation session). I think they have campus tours and other stuff for parents later while we are going through department orientation and then advising. My parents are both UT grads, and I am the third of three kids going to UT, so they won’t be attending. But, I heard a lot of parents and other family members have a good time checking out the campus.
Also, the International Office is at 24th and Nueces, on the first floor of my apartment building - 2400 Nueces ;). It is about a 5-10 minute walk from Burdine because of traffic lights on Guadalupe. So basically you should count on being out of orientation for about 30 minutes unless the IO is advising closer to Burdine. But my brothers told me the first session is just a general welcome with short speeches and that sort of stuff.
Did anyone else get really awful financial aid?
They want my parents to take out a 10k per semester loan and me a 6k per semester loan.
Other schools I applied to gave me grants and such. This is borderline insanity.
For future Spring transfer students… If you somehow end up reading this… Orientation was a freaking joke. Learn the numbering system of the school and I think you’ll be fine. Others that attended orientation might disagree with me, but I honestly didn’t learn anything except the numbering system and what classes I need. (Which I already knew.) The thing that helped me the most was going to the campus and familiarizing myself with where the buildings were located.
@UTpatriot17 I agree that it was not especially useful. It wasn’t required and now I can see why. It was nice to get familiar with the campus and talk to the advisors but that can easily be done on your own time throughout the week. Even as a veteran I say this because UT is actually very straightforward and efficient with their VA benefits and financial aid. I thought it was vital that I go to those two events but the financial aid meeting in particular was a giant waste of time if you’ve ever gone through that process at another school. They don’t tell you anything in person that you can’t find on the website. I’m glad they send out the refund so quickly. Apparently we’ll get it in the next week. I was used to my CC waiting until about 6 weeks after the first day of class to receive any money.
Overall I’d say the registration process at UT is not nearly as stressful as many made it out to be. It’s way more of a mess at other schools.
Hi everyone, congrats on your acceptances! I am applying into UT CNS as a biology major for fall of 2015 and had a question regarding transfer hours. On your applytexas applications, for “hours earned”, did you include AP credit hours or just the hours you actually earned at your current institute?
I agree that orientation was pretty useless, but learning about the different ways to pay for tuition was so helpful!! I did the Tuition Loan through UT since my hazel wood stuff hasn’t come in yet, and it was like a huge weight has been lifted. I’m a little mad though that they had us sign up for classes so late because now we only have a week to take our ALEKS. I don’t move till saturday so I have no idea how I’m going to get my written calculus test taken on time.
As someone thats never taken classes at an actual university before - are we supposed to keep gaps between classes? The campus is HUGE. Do professors let you go when class is supposed to end or a few minutes earlier? For example, I have a class at Robert Lee Moore that ends at 9:30, then another class at Welch that starts AT 9:30. Should I play it safe and leave a gap or am I just being paranoid? lol
