Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Many of you are not taking in what I said, your picking out words and refuting my comments based on your own mislead interpretation. Yes, keeping light contact with the college you are applying to can help- this is easy information to verify by a quick Google search. That being said, again, good luck to you all. I hope someone out there can lighten the vibe around here for everyone’s sake.

I’m hoping there will be some McCombs decisions released this week!! Some were released around this time last year. :slight_smile:

“Level of applicant’s interest” means that the applicant has taken classes, done extracurriculars and has worked in fields related to their intended major. For example, if someone is applying to Electrical Engineering, why would they consider an applicant “interested” when their course work consists of 40 hours of Liberal Arts classes, their only jobs have been working in theater groups and their essay was about how Shakespeare’s works changed their life?

How would anyone know you’re interested by you calling and emailing? Admissions gets thousands of calls/emails a day. They’re not tracking every single one of them. They can’t possibly remember every single person who contacts them. It’s reality.

Having hope is one thing, but so is having realistic expectations. Spending your summer playing video games is a better use of time than calling admissions and stressing over decisions. Once your Spring grades are submitted, there is literally nothing else you can do. They’re not accepting any other admissions information besides that.

@BlueMoonArmy

This is patently untrue, at least at most other schools. For example, at virtually all the small and medium size schools, interest means that you have taken some real effort to learn about the school in general. Your previous statement

is hilarious and I hope was a joke. One shows interest by visiting campus if possible, attending college presentations in your home area and talking to the rep of that school (yes, they do in fact add those kinds of tidbits to your admissions file) and having some level of correspondence with admissions, although certainly not to the point of badgering.

Under your scenario of interest being related to major and courses taken, that would mean that any freshman trying to transfer in as a sophomore would be automatically rejected if they were changing majors, and especially anyone that was coming in undecided. That’s ludicrous. In fact, Texas isn’t going to reject someone if they said they were essentially starting over. Maybe they started out in engineering or architecture someplace else and decided it wasn’t for them at all. They might want to take 4 years in Austin to graduate. They would still most likely be of sophomore standing, but lots of kids take 5 years to graduate, even those starting out at Austin.

Your statements in these aspects are way off base for any school of which I am aware, and that is quite a few. So unless UT Austin is really unique in their policies, I suggest people take your statements with a huge grain of salt.

@fallenchemist Since when was UT a small/medium sized school? UT is gigantic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_at_Austin

“The institution has the fifth-largest single-campus enrollment in the nation, with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 24,000 faculty and staff.”

How is a school that massive gauging the interest of every single applicant that calls and visits?

Of course the endowment part was a joke. No one on this board can afford to donate a few tens of thousands of dollars to UT. If we could, we wouldn’t be posting on CC. We’d already have an admissions letter.

So how many people who have only courses in completely unrelated areas of study actually successfully transfer into a different major at UT? Not Undeclared, I mean actually into the major of their choice. Cockrell and CNS both demand around 9+ hours worth of related courses. Who here has successfully transferred into Cockrell or CNS without a Calculus, Physics, Biology, Chemistry or other STEM track completed? Their admissions policy already places a lock out to transfers who don’t possess related courses.

@fallenchemist I appreciate your effort, but UT Austin is absolutely unique in everything they do regarding admissions. I find it confusing that you’re using your knowledge of what ‘small/medium’ sized schools do as a parameter of judgment for UT.

UT is one of the largest schools in the entire country.

@Clintonwk The fact that UT Austin has a Supreme Court case pending with them in regards to their admissions, the Texas law demanding that 90% of their total student body be Texas residents with 75% of all slots devoted just to newly graduated Texas high school freshmen and that just last year UT came under fire for nepotism in their admissions policy already tells me they do things differently.

@BlueMoonArmy

Show me exactly where I said UT-Austin was a small-medium sized school. I never did. You inferred it, I did not even imply it since I assumed it is so well known how huge UT Austin is that no one could possibly think that I took it for a small to medium size school. Clearly I was extrapolating.

So if I call UT Austin tomorrow and ask their transfer admissions officers what demonstrated interest means, they will confirm your account? I still say your definition makes no sense if it excludes students that want to start in a new major. Why should they treat a transfer student with one year of college experience that differently than an undeclared freshman? More likely they will say that they have no idea what I am talking about since as my next post shows, this whole discussion is off base.

And btw, all those things you think are so unique to UT apply to many other state schools as well. Whatever the SCOTUS decides for UT will apply to all public schools.

So, I’ve been silently reading, trying to keep my mouth shut… but I just have to add… I applied to CNS, without Calculus, and I’m not “locked out”.

BTW, @BlueMoonArmy and @Clintonwk

I would also submit the entire discussion is misplaced from the start, for this thread at least, since in post #2077 @bookmom7 cited the Common Data Set, Section C part C7 as her source, and that section is for “FIRST-TIME, FIRST-YEAR (FRESHMAN) ADMISSION”. Hard for those students to show any credit hours towards their major in the vast majority of cases, I would say.

For transfer students section D is applicable, and it says nothing about “demonstrated interest”. Leads me to believe the rest was pure conjecture, since there is no evidence that transfer admissions has any such requirement. They do require art and architecture students to submit portfolios, but I suspect that is required of high school seniors applying in those fields as well. They also require 30 hours as a minimum to have completed, but say zero about it having to be in any field at all. Much more logical to think that UT is open to someone that might have started out in one direction and now wants to retrench in another.

@britni12

Not sure who you are talking to.

@BlueMoonArmy said folks without calculus can be locked out of CNS… I was just adding that I applied for CNS without Calc, and I’m not locked out… I’m still in review.

Any news from Moody, anyone?

@fallenchemist If you knew UT was a giant school, then why did you bother to bring up small/medium sized schools when you KNEW it’s not one? I wasn’t talking about those school. I’m specifically talking about UT. So why did you bother to mention small/medium sized schools in the first place? You inferred that the same aspects would apply to UT by bringing them up in the first place.

https://cns.utexas.edu/students/future/external-transfer

“Demonstrated interest in math and science is also considered. Applicants may utilize all aspects of the admissions application including essays, resume, and optional letters of recommendation to express their intended academic and career path in the sciences.”

http://www.engr.utexas.edu/undergraduate/admissions/externaltransfer

“Each transfer applicant’s performance in technical coursework such as calculus, chemistry and physics is carefully reviewed.”

Both colleges make it pretty clear that they base admissions to them based on taking related course work, and CNS even defines what it considers “demonstrated interest”. Call whoever you want and ask them if you want to prove your point. I’m basing what I say off what their website says directly.

As for what they’d say to students changing majors? Probably “Tough luck, go get some prerequisites done elsewhere.” Again, you say my explanation doesn’t account for those students, but how many students with only courses in unrelated majors successfully transfer into the major they want at UT?

As I said, I was extrapolating from the extensive experience with those other schools. But now it is clear we are talking about several different things, and in your case not the same as mine at all. You totally fail to address that the original comment wasn’t even based on transfer admissions. Second, I would again consider it obvious that if a student is looking to transfer into a specialized school such as engineering, of course they would need to show that they had preparatory work for that. But I would still maintain that a student with a start in engineering elsewhere that decided to transfer to UT because they had changed to wanting history as a major or were now undecided would not be denied entry to the College of Liberal Arts based on only having math/science courses, with English likely thrown in. I am assuming that is where most undecided majors are initially registered at a school like Texas.

Only RTF is updated.

@britni12 you wouldn’t be locked out for not taking calculus but

"To be most competitive, students should have:

Demonstrated interest and ability in their desired field
Strong overall grade-point average (GPA)—see our Transfer Statistics for more information
Credit for Calculus
A minimum of nine credit hours in first year math and science courses for science majors
A grade of A or B in all math and science courses"

This is from their website. CNS is known to prioritize the calculus class.

Even the CAP students were strongly recommended to take calculus I and II

There is a mistake underneath Cockrell that I forgot to fix. atghookem is Arch Engineering not Civil, Arch and Environmental

@ashwitch I’m still waiting to hear from Moody. This wait is intense! I hope it is over soon, good or bad.

Other moody majors that were looking for apartments, I’m interested too! I’m not sure who it was specifically that was looking for roommates. There aren’t very many apartments left but when we go down for orientation maybe we can look at some.
