Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

It does not matter what orientation you go to because all the classes left over that are still available are usually either the worst classes or hardest. Transfer student GPA’S tend to drop to around a 2.0 in the fall/spring according to the dean. Get ready to study!

I meant to post this a long time ago when I got my admissions decision but I made it into Moody- Corporate Communications with 34 hours completely transferred- 3 letters of recommendations, a resume packed with service projects etc. and a 4.0 GPA! Thank yell for the help and can not wait for orientation in July!

Hi guys, long-time lurker of this thread. I just found out my appeal was approved and I’ve now been accepted to CNS for Biology. I originally submitted my appeal back when I was first denied around May 29. And for future reference: my stats are a cumulative 2.99 GPA and 90 hours

Congrats guys who got in and good luck!

Any biology/biochem majors accepted? If so plz post as many of your stats as possible. Thanks and congratz!!

Hi everyone
I’m entering my Soph year with 46 credits, going to end Fall 16 semester with 60 but am applying for the Spring semester to UT and was just wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me.

  1. How long should the essay be, I’ve been told 2 pages was fine and I know it says on the application page it says it shouldn’t be longer than 120 lines. Just needed some clarification.
  2. I am PreMed and currently a Nutrition/Public Health major at my current school - Michigan State - and was wondering how difficult it would be to get into the CNS at UT Austin. Should I just apply as undeclared or for the CNS which one would I have a better chance of getting into.
  3. Overall I am involved with a few clubs on campus as well as I volunteer with an organization, I have a 3.06 overall I (I know it’s pretty low compared to everyone else my chemistry grade 1st semester messed me up besides that I have gotten a 3.0-4.0 in all my classes, plus I am currently retaking the Chemistry class), and will be receiving two letters of recommendation from previous professors. With everything in consideration what is my likelihood of being accepted?

Hi @PGYASI20

I was just accepted for fall 2016. I had a 3.1 GPA and got rejected from CNS, but accepted to my second choice in COLA (Liberal Arts - Philosophy). I would recommend choosing a COLA major as your second choice as a safety net.

I too had an upward trend in grades as well and I think that benefited me greatly. Having a low GPA is rough applying to schools like UT, but you should definitely give it a shot. Just don’t go all in - make sure you have a legit backup plan.

@PGYASI20

  1. Honestly two pages and under if you can. I would even go as far as to say 1 1/2 pages if you feel you can tell everything within that length. This isn't supposed to be some long winded essay. It's supposed to be short, concise, and well developed, if that makes sense. Longer essay doesn't necessarily mean better essay.
  2. Make sure you meet the pre-reqs for CNS in the first place. It's highly recommended that you have all of those completed/in progress when you apply. It's not a deal breaker if you don't but you're already setting yourself back if you don't have them. After that it all depends on your grades and how well you do in your math/science classes. An upward trend in grades can sometimes outweigh a low gpa. Apply for the CNS major you want to get into and make your second choice something that you wouldn't mind doing. A lot of people choose their first major and then make their second choice undeclared, planning to transfer into their real major after getting into undeclared. This is risky because UT is cracking down on this. Transferring into another major is becoming harder, albeit not impossible, but just not as easy as submitting a form and getting approved. Some majors only accept a few transfers so it might be statistically harder to transfer into from undeclared then just transfer into from another university. Remember that you can't transfer to another major once you reach your senior year in a major, unless you get written approval from the dean I believe. Only choose undeclared if you don't mind staying there for at least two semester. You could also choose another major that is related but not as competitive. For example some business applicants put economics as their second choice. Choose carefully and plan accordingly.
  3. Remember that this isn't high school, so don't try to be involved in a million clubs with 2,000 hours of volunteer service. UT isn't looking for that. It's better to stick with one or two organizations and really achieve a lot within them. Your gpa is on the low end, it's going to be hard to fix that in one or two semesters. What you can do is try to get as many A's as you can. An upward trend in grades can sometimes weigh more than a raw gpa. Focus on that upward trend in grades, it's your best shot. Letters of recommendation always help when your gpa isn't spectacular. All in all, I think you honestly have a 50/50. Your gpa isn't high enough right now to say its 100% but your upward trend in grades could get you in. Your major isn't super competitive so it shouldn't be too hard.

Focus on getting that upward trend in grades and you shouldn’t be completely written off. Best of luck.

Strange to think it is finally happening. Bombed my first year in college in 05/06, and eventually joined te Army. Two combat tours, and 3 years at ACC and I get accepted on an appeal! Many of us were probably at the same orientation on June 30-July 1, after spending months giving each other any kind of info and encouragement we could find! As corny as much of the orientation presentations were, I seriously nearly cried when they had everyone sing The Eyes of Texas. I’m sure I speak for many when I say it has been a long road getting to this point! Good luck to everyone, hope to see you on the 40 acres! First semester is a doozy, so hit the ground running. Hook 'Em Horns!

@PGYASI20 apply to CNS and Cola. If you get accepted to cola you an always internal transfer to CNS. It is easier. I’m pre med as well and internally transferred into Biology with a 3.0

Since I’m COLA Undeclared now and trying to internal transfer to Cockrell ME… I’ve been super discouraged and somewhat regret my decision to accept UT.

I mean it’s too late now since I’ve already signed into a contract with an apartment in West Campus. I figured I could spend another year doing COLA Undeclared and at the same time get prereqs and more technical courses out of the way but looking at how the 2016 internal transfer GPA cutoff for Cockrell went up REALLY high this year is kind of bumming me out.

At this point it’s a 4.0 or bust. UT is by no means, an easy school either and the +/- grading system kind of sucks. I need an A+ in every class or else forget about it. And it’s hard for me to even register for all the classes I need because it’s all waitlisted or closed.

I’m regretting everything now. If you’re CAP don’t do CAP (unless you’re planning to major for COLA). And if you were planning to internal transfer to Cockrell forget about it unless you know you can get a 4.0 at UT.

@cherry018 I know this isn’t terribly encouraging, but you would only need a 94+ in every class to get a 4.0, since everything about that is an A. Doesn’t help much, but it’s better than having to get straight 98s, right? Good luck next year, you’re going to do fabulously!

@ChaosFromTejas I am at orientation right now and I totally had misty eyes during the videos as well, cheese aside. I am SO HAPPY to be here!! HOOK 'EM!

Anyone going to the aug transfer orientation

Hey can anyone chance me for transfer admission to CNS. Thanks.

3.7 GPA
2 solid essays
5 medical internships
Research with Internal Medicine
3-5 Letters of Reccomendation
Leadership positions in a few clubs
Founder of my own club
30 hours exactly for transfer

I know the process is holistic, but i just want some opinions. Thanks.

@RocketKid3333 what major in CNS?

@UT2019

My first choice is biology and my second choice is the Undeclared major that they offer.

I did do the pre-reqs

Whats ur opinion on my chances?

Cheers,
