Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Hello fellow applicants!
I’ve been lurking on this thread for a while now, and it’s comforting to see I’m not the only one biting their nails waiting for a decision.
I was wondering if anyone could explain how UT calculates its ‘admission’ GPA. Their website

Do any of you know when we should hear back about financial aid?

Congrats to all that are accepted I as well have a 4.0 but I am waiting on Moody. I feel its gonna be a bit lol

Hello fellow applicants! (sorry in advance for the lengthy post)
I’ve been lurking on this thread for a while now, and it’s oddly comforting to see I’m not the only one biting their nails waiting for a decision.

I was wondering if anyone could explain how UT calculates its ‘admission’ GPA.
Their website states:
“Each instance in which a course is taken is counted when GPA is computed. For example, a course that a student takes twice in an effort to raise a grade is counted twice when the GPA is computed. However, transfer credit for a repeated course is counted only once.”

The line “However, transfer credit for a repeated…” is where I get confused. If I understand correctly, the GPA they consider during the admissions process is calculated by dividing your ‘quality points’ by your overall attempted hours, right? The community college I am currently enrolled in has a column for GPA hours on my transcript, which excludes hours on repeated courses, and the cumulative GPA is found by dividing quality points by GPA hours. In other words, I have several 'E’s and 'I’s under the “Repeat Status” column on my transcript. Needless to say, this is my second attempt at college after a pitiful start 9-10 years ago. Frankly, I was a crappy student while I was younger–and, if it keeps me out of UT, I have no one to blame but myself. I also screwed up by not applying for the transfer scholarship before April 1st, which would have shown me what UT currently considers GPA to be.

But – before you very intelligent and driven individuals judge me – I’m trying to get my life together. My grades have been trending very well since returning to a local community college in 2014. I have sustained a GPA above 3.8 in that time frame. After repeating all but one course I had previously failed, my cumulative GPA on my CC’s transcript is now a 3.69. All that is well and good, but if I am calculating UT’s admission GPA correctly, it still puts me below a 3.0, which would render me ineligible (would it not?). This leaves me wondering why I haven’t been flat out rejected yet.

It doesn’t help I am applying for the highly coveted and competitive CS department either.
Trying to stay positive, but this has been more nerve-racking than anything I can remember. If I’m not UT material (by any of your standards or that of the school’s), so be it. I’m lucky to be in a state that has plenty of other schools to choose from. But, I’d be lying if I didn’t say the slim chance to get into UT has been a major source of motivation these last couple of years.

Anywho, thanks for reading this, and I wish everyone the best of luck. At the very least, most of you are in a better situation, and maybe my story will give you a little more confidence in getting accepted.

@BladesofGlory I applied to Moody with a 4.0 as well and have not heard anything either. What major did you apply for?

@ImDerped I am in the SAME situation. My GPA from 8 years ago is a 2.something. My last 2 years of school have been all As. The college DOES look at academic growth. They will see how you’ve grown and take it in consideration, as long as you explain your Fs from the past in your essays. (Talked with an application evaluator in March). One negative is the major you applied to is EXTREMELY competetive. I will cross my fingers for you!!

@prospectivehorn2 RTF

@BladesofGlory I applied to Advertising so hopefully we hear something next week.

Hey guys, I applied to Cockrell Engineering from a community college and sent in my application Feb 27th (Couple days before the deadline). I was accepted yesterday and have a 3.88 GPA. So I think they’re accepting more than just 4.0’s, everything in the application counts, keep your heads up!

@ImDerped if I’m reading your post correctly, I would say those “under 3.0” calculations are incorrect. It would go off of completed, not attempted hours. Does “I” mean incomplete? Because those won’t count towards GPA, Ido what e means.

@canieldruz Congrats! What Engineering program did you apply for?

@PenaDelia Thank you! I applied for Aerospace Engineering. I worked very hard the essays I submitted so that may have helped a lot. I am one of the three that @EncisoEngineer mentioned earlier in this thread.

Jealous of all of you hearing back! I have 2 4.0 students waiting on transfer news (one internal, one external). Keep hoping they’ll just look at their fall transcripts and say “good enough!” LOL

@rach98n My transfer student is patiently waiting on transfer news too. He was accepted to two other universities and they have an acceptance deadline of 5/15. I hope UT Austin responds before then since that’s actually his first choice. (actually, I’m anxiously waiting for the new myself)

@NosyParent16 - hate it! Mine is accepted to honors at another university so we have moved forward with housing, etc as a backup. It’s going to be a mad rush when we get the news!

@canieldruz Would you mind sharing your other stats/credentials? We have the same GPA, so I’m just wondering what factors are differentiating us as far as which applicant pool we were put in. They’re might not be a good answer, other than UT is an opaque crap shoot, but I can’t help but wonder all the same.

@canieldruz Also, congrats, man. Nice work.

@ReverseCremation Thanks! Sure, I know exactly what you’re feeling, and any bit of information counts!

My stats:
High School Class of 2014

College GPA: 3.88 and 58 Credits (70 after this semester)

MATH: College Algebra - Calculus 2 (Currently in Calculus 3)
PHYSICS: University Physics 1 (Currently in University Physics 2)
CHEMISTRY: General Chemistry 1 (Currently in Gen Chem 2)
Two semesters of core courses including English, Government, History.
(two B’s in the core courses)

One letter of recommendation from chemistry professor.
Three essays (worked very hard on them)

Moderately involved on campus:
Phi Theta Kappa (never been to a meeting)
Mentoring Program (attended two meetings)

Very involved all throughout last year in church with a youth group

Employed since junior year in high school, starting in the restaurant industry then moving to math tutoring on campus (not work-study).

My biggest worry was those two B’s and the fact that I withdrew from two courses during my first semester because of an emergency.

Hope this helps!

@canieldruz lol, dude, we have really similar stats. Thanks for sharing, man.

Quiet day! Let’s hope some decisions roll out Monday!
