I am waiting on COLA…
People who have been accepted - how does decision show up on MyStatus? Is it immediately obvious?
I want to know about CNS already. Growing very very anxious.
@Clintonwk from what I’ve seen of friends the first word is Congratulations it’s pretty obvious.
@Clintonwk Yes it is hard to miss, it says CONGRATULATIONS, then instead of your application materials it has a drop down of the stuff you need to do to completely enroll at UT. The part I find funny is the deadline to accept in May 1 which says to me a LOT of decisions are going to be rolled out in the next few days lol.
I think some people aren’t posting when they don’t get in because admissions percent as someone pointed out IS very low for transfers because UT retains a lot of it’s students as opposed to your average state university that keeps 50% of its students each year and needs transfers to fill the gap in graduating seniors vs. incoming freshman. UT just doesnt have space to take everyone who applies or even most people.
@lilwaves It’s a HOLISTIC review of ur application. It’s not about “oh this is my gpa, admit me” it’s about having an experience and statements (essays) that support a clear trajectory of what you want to do and letting them know how they can help you do that. They admit students they think will be successful at UT overall imo. It really depends on how ur work experience speaks to ur degree (are you a broadcast major… but working at pizza hut for 2 years???) and a positive trend academically (do you drop every hard class to get a high gpa, etc). and those sorts of details ppl infer from reviewing ur materials that’ll dictate whtether u get accepted. Not ur “Stats” hehe.
I talked to someone in engineering admissions and he actually told me the process is based off GPA. He didn’t just say GPA was the most important aspect, he explicitly stated that GPA is really what they look at. I was kind of surprised and asked him about all the other stuff like resumes, recommendation letters, and work experience and he said it carried very little weight.
I get the feeling that this link about holistic review provides a good overview of the weight of your application materials as far as decisions: https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/decisions/freshman-review
I know the link is for freshman applicants, but on another page UT says, "Transfer applications, like freshman applications, undergo holistic review. But high school performance and SAT/ACT test scores are not considered. Instead, we look for:
- Substantial coursework from a challenging academic institution
- Evidence of relevant coursework and experiences related to your field of study
- Required courses for specific areas of study
- Evidence of a positive academic trend (GPA)"
Between these two pieces of information, I crossed out the things that didn’t apply to me as a transfer applicant from the freshman holistic review link above and I could see a potential order of how they prioritize what you give them in your app. This is all conjecture, but it makes some sense to me.
@WannabeBanana thanks for the helpful post. Since the deadline for that is May 1st my anxiety has just reached max level :-S
Goodluck to all seems like everyone is about to get their answer with over 30 hours!
@EncisoEngineer Considering how fast they decided, I’d be inclined to believe that it’s true. If they were actually taking the time to read through everything, then it seems to me like they would take just as long as the other really competitive colleges.
@EncisoEngineer i truly think it’s GPA and essays. i called UT admissions like once a week for months and they STRESSED the essay portion of it, and eventually said "look the main thing we are looking for is someone who knows how to write.
"
I feel like they all say different things lol, I think maybe the first rounds they focus primarily on GPA. I mean it makes sense that they would go off GPA, it shows that the person worked hard and applied themselves in every class. That is the type of person who will succeed in engineering. Especially in classes as rigorous as those at UT and A&M. I slacked off really bad in my easier elective classes and it is probably going to affect my chances at getting in UT. I have gotten all A’s since last summer so hopefully they will see the GPA growth and my GPA in my math and sciences! And what major did you apply to @mintpopsicles ? It seems a bit weird that the main thing they would focus on for engineers is writing ability.
@EncisoEngineer yeah i applied to PR in communications, i could see how that would be different. do you think your essays will have much weight?
I am not sure how much weight they carry. I put a good amount of time into mine and I think they turned out decent. I think it will be mostly GPA based and mine is not the best. If I submit my spring grades I should end up with about a 3.75-3.8
@EncisoEngineer can you do that…? can you resubmit spring grades after you’ve been accepted?
so guys, i’m only taking 8 hours this semester to keep my hours low which is supposed to be desirable for UT. welllll it looks like i screwed up two deadlines for this one class, so i might end up with a b. however, i could retake the class this summer and get an A guaranteed. should i drop the class and retake it or do you think that will hurt my application in any way?
@mintpopsicles your under 30 hours? If so I would prob just finish out the class with a B
It looks better than a drop. Because a drop usually means you are in the C/D grade area
@DaveCloud no i’m right at 30 hours on my application. so i won’t have to resubmit i think? i will have 38 by the end of this semester. but if i retake it in the summer for an A would that make a difference? i would have a W but on your transcript it says clearly whether or not you retook the class. I already have one W that i retook and got an A in.
No dude don’t retake it if you’re already applying with 30 hours. They’ll decide before they see your grades anyway. Stick with the B, save the money
@mintpopsicles yeah I would definetely just finish it up. If you want to retake during the summer that’s your call and it would replace the B. But someone in the past few comments said UT looks at W’s as a way for students to just get a higher gpa and they don’t like it on their applicants or something. Since you shouldn’t have to resubmit I would just finish it and move on.
Has anyone received a response from Chemical or Mechanical Engineering?
