Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Thanks! Would you happen to know if they would count my AP credits in the event that they don’t accept the credits from the classes I took? For example, if they didn’t accept the three credits from “Mentored Field Practicum” could they replace that with three credits from AP classes?

I know they do count AP credits as hours, but not sure how that applies towards getting credit for them as classes.

@FluffyPanda You should be good. You’ll probably get in to your first choice. But I doubt that AP hours count towards the 30 semester hour requirement.

@PetroBear84 This whole thread is speculation to an extent, but as the saying goes, “To know the road ahead, ask those coming back”.

@Newsie2015 Hm. I thought CAP was auto-admit given that you fulfill like a 3.2 requirement?

@BlueMoonArmy Only you know whether or not to send your grades in. Will they help or hurt? Act accordingly, because they definitely have the chance to affect things.

@DaveCloud, @Clintonwk, the Hoopla is like my daytime soap opera fix. I need to have more.

AP credits do count towards 30 hours.

@JavaCoco @FluffyPanda If that is the case, I stand corrected

@mightbcrazy yes i have auto admit to UT Austin but not to my major. So its possible that even though I am eligble and auto-admitted that I could forced to be in COLA instead of Moody.

There are reserved seats for CAP students in each major so (not to brag) I would say that i have a better shot of getting in than an ordinary transfer but I still have to compete.

@Newsie2015 Oh ok, that makes sense. You definitely have a better shot then.

Do you know what the out of state transfer acceptance rate is for UT? I haven’t been able to find solid numbers on that. Just out of curiosity. Is it harder or easier than incoming freshman out of state admission?

@FluffyPanda It’s a lot harder to get in as freshman if you’re counting AP hours towards your 30+ requirement. Yes they do accept AP hours but do note that some majors don’t allow you to claim AP credit for a certain class. They want you to take their version of the class for xyz reason. You most likely won’t get a decision until they review your spring grades and they know you have 30+ hours from both college semesters. AP is good but they aren’t measuring your high school performance. They want to see how you perform at the college level. What good is it if you can get 5’s but you get C+/B- in college? Posting your SAT scores is also irrelevant. They don’t really look at that as a big determining factor, they look at your performance in college mostly.

@mightbcrazy @Newsie2015 Yes you do get automatic acceptance as a CAP student if you meet the requirements, but it’s to the university and not your specific major. You could be studying aero engineering and get accepted for CAP but may aero is already full and they aren’t taking any more students. In that case, they would deny you from the major and move on to your second major. Worst comes to worse and you get accepted into undeclared. CAP doesn’t guarantee you’ll get your major, it just guarantees that you’ll get into the university. With regards to “seats saved for CAP students,” again that’s at a university level. It doesn’t mean that aero will save 5 spots for CAP students only.

Also, CAP students have a better chance of getting into the university but not into their major. CAP students and transfers are on the same level when it comes to individual major decisions. It’s not like CAP students have a better chance of getting into aero than transfers. Everyone is weighted equally for majors.

I just really hope I get into the CNS. I am finally submitting my final transcript next week since yesterday was the last day of finals for my school. What is the timeline of hearing a decision from the admissions department? Looking at the statistics on the CNS website, there is always available spots in the college since not everyone they admit enrolls in the first place.

@FluffyPanda This link is for the CNS. https://cns.utexas.edu/students/future/external-transfer#transfer-statistics

Out of 518 students admitted last year, 12.4% were non-residents. Don’t forget that UTexas is one of the hardest schools to get admitted to out of state as a freshman.

@hookemlion504 The timeline is so wishy washy. If you haven’t been accepted by now they are probably going to compare you to the freshman transfer pool who’s sending in their spring grades. It’s all about how strong your performed this semester vs the overall strength of the remaining pool. Sit tight and wait it out. That whole rumor that’s like, “If you haven’t been accepted by second week of June then you’re probably rejected,” is utter nonsense. People still get accepted during the last week. It’s just that by then is when they send out all rejections and so people think its only rejections.

True. Not everyone accepts their admission but don’t let that fool you. It’s a small percentage. Not many people spam colleges with applications like they did senior year of hs. It more like just sending in one or two at most applications for most transfers. So many accept their admission.

@utairplane28 Well, I am a math and cs double major transferring in with a 3.93 GPA. My only B is in a sophmore/junior level theory course that I took as a freshman with calculus 1. I feel I have a solid transcript compared to the rest of the “in progress” transfer applicants and I am confident that my essays were excellent. My transcript has 26 hours of math and science courses with one B on it out of 41 total hours.

@utairplane28 Thanks for clarifying. Are there seats saved for UT internal transfers in each major? Or are all transfers on the same level there as well?

@hookemlion504 That sounds like a pretty strong application from the academic side. Just remember that they also look at resumes/experience, especially for cs where internships are key. I had a relatively low GPA for cs, 3.76, but I think I got in because my resume was also very competitive. Maybe you are really strong academically but not on your resume…I don’t know. Perhaps some other “in progress” transfer applicant has had an internship with a big company and you haven’t. Just know that for a top ranked department like cs, they don’t just want academically talented students. They also look for students with a strong internships. Doesn’t mean that some that all admits are like that, but most are. I wish you the best of luck and hope to see you in the fall on campus.

@mightbcrazy Internal transfers are a different story. They don’t exactly save seats because internal transfers aren’t that common after first year. As a result, they usually evaluate those internal transfers on a per case basis. My understanding is that they are also on the same level as transfers.

@hookemlion504 @utairplane28 All of my advisors told me internships are really important for some majors. I feel like strong academics with a weak resume could potentially affect your chances. I have 2 internships and I think they will really really help my chances for Moody.
