I’m a freshman applying to McCombs (first choice) and Economics (second choice). I have 15 HS credits and 16 College credits which means I technically do not need to send in my Spring transcript. However due to what @utairplane28 has said, I am considering sending it in to provide more relevant material for admissions to review.
My first semester GPA was a 3.94 (4 A’s, 1 A-). My second semester GPA fell of a bit, as I got one B+ and four A’s. Cumulatively, my total GPA is a 3.91 now. Looking at the past year admission statistics, it seems the average admitted GPA was a 3.96, so do you guys think I should submit my Spring transcript? On one hand, it will provide them with more substantial material to review, and on the other, the lower GPA will probably hurt me.
Also, that one A- I received during the Fall was in Macroeconomics, which is considered an indicator course. During the Spring semester, I earned an A in Microeconomics. So, to re-state, I am torn between multiple factors for deciding if I should submit my updated transcript.
As far as the other components of my application, I had 3 LOC, 2 essays I personally believe were excellent, 2 officer positions on school organizations, and 15 hours of community service.
There is some great discussion going on here, but just a reminder everyone, take everything you read on here with a grain of salt. There are those who are more educated on these matters and are willing to help (thank you!), but just keep in mind that no one ACTUALLY knows what’s going on behind the scenes.
@sabassian Honestly you’re overreacting to the situation. One B+ isn’t going to make or break you. Your GPA is strong for McCombs and you have decent stats for a freshman transfer. I don’t know what you mean by HS credits (community college course taken in hs or ap exams) but just submit your spring grades anyway.
@utairplane28 Thank you for your suggestion! The HS credits I mentioned are indeed a combination of dual credit and AP exams. My biggest fear is if I submit my updated transcript I fall from a 3.94 to a 3.91, and the average GPA for transfers from last year was a 3.96.
@utairplane28 I do not have any internships with technology companies, but I do have real job experience being in the fine dining industry as a server, cocktail bar-tending, and studying for the somm exam . So, hopefully sending my expanded resume with experience from when I was 16 until now has a lot of influence with authenticity and taking things I do seriously goes a long way. I am a freshman, so many tech companies don’t want you to apply for internships until after sophomore year. I started school in the fall and I am twenty-four, my experience is a little higher and I know what I want to do as far as earning my PhD, committing to undergraduate research opportunists, and internships that exist in Austin to Texas students. I am going to make the most of every opportunity and I will compete with current students to stay relative. My only B I ever receive in college is in Discrete Mathematics as a freshman and I feel mathematical theory will be my only obstacle as I will receive As in every computational math course I will take at University of Texas.
@utairplane28 if I already have a 4.0 GPA with 30 hours from my university, plus an additional 16 hours from high school, do you think that they would still consider them?
@utairplane28 What you said was what I was saying. Except I actually did call the university about reserved seats per major and that’s what they told me. Each CAP student had to declare their major sometime in February. The university looks at those numbers and starts saving seats in each major. They don’t save for every CAP/PACE student but they do save some. If you think about it from their perspective, CAP doesn’t work if the kids don’t get in. And freshman offered CAP are less likely to take the option.
@hookemlion504 That’s really awesome that you’re taking on school at your age and that you’ve had real work experience. With regards to internships for freshman from tech companies, Google, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Mongo DB, Foursquare all offer internships for freshman. Not to mention many other smaller companies that also offer positions. Perhaps you should research them and apply next year for an opportunity. Your last sentence, the one that starts with “My only B,” comes off as arrogant to me. Maybe its just me maybe its just the way you wrote it. That is all.
@FluffyPanda438 Yes they will. You meet the requirement as specified on the site with 30 hours.
@hookemlion504 i totally agree with @utairplane28 , there are so many internship opportunities all over the city. you don’t even necessarily have to officially apply. sometimes you can find great opportunities by just ASKING people, calling around, etc.
i landed both my communications internships by simply approaching someone at my job (as a bartender, no less) and asking them if i could help in any way. one was for the texas house of representatives and i got to work at the capitol during session. really cool opportunity, and all it took was a simple conversation. keep asking around, don’t let tech company “standards” keep you from excelling.
@utairplane28 I didn’t think his “only B” statement was arrogant, however… his, “I have a solid transcript compared to the rest of the “in progress” transfer applicants” statement was. That statement kind of struck me, like… he believes he is above all of us. I don’t mean to sound rude, but… I hate to break it to him, if you’re still in review, we are all being compared to each other at this point, regardless of academic performance. Holistic review all the way going forward. Someone who has an impressive perseverance story, or an excellent personal aheivement can certainly get in over a person with 3.9 GPA who may come across arrogant in their essays. Noone knows what UT is looking at right now. I do not mean this post to be rude in any way, just an honest impression from that statement.
@britni12@mintpopsicles@hookemlion504 Yeah I mean there is no really debating that what you wrote came off as arrogant in some way or another. I knew I couldn’t be the only one to notice it. I’m not here to say you’re garbage, I’m better, hope you don’t get in you scrub. No. I hope you are just feeling frustrated with the admissions process, or maybe you took one of my replies to harsh, or perhaps you just wanted to get your point across. Either way I hope you didn’t have that attitude across your essays because admissions will definitely pick up on that. I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you get in if you really do have outstanding merits. I’m no one to judge your merits for admission, only admissions can. Good day to you sir.
Guysssss!!! I’m really nervous… Can someone tell me my chances? Last semester I started out with a 3.75 and now after the spring semester I now have a ~3.5 my intentions are to transfer into COLA undeclared, I have one really good letter of Rec. from a restaurant manager and 2 okay quality essays. Is it even possible to get into COLA undeclared with how low my gpa is now?!? Thanks.
