SSAT percentiles

Sorry if this is a repeat question…when students are talking about scoring in a certain percentile are they talking about national percentile?

i never understood that either…

There are several percentiles on the SSAT score sheets (which I just pulled out of my D’s file):

In the upper left-hand box (under the SSAT logo):
Verbal Percentile
Math Percentile
Reading Percentile
Total Percentile

Then, in the bottom right-hand box, they provide the “Estimated National Percentile”

The ones that seem to matter are in the upper left-hand box. You could get a less than 99% “Total” Percentile score, and still get a 99% on the “Estimated National Percentile”.

On this site when people are taking about percentiles, they’re talking about the percentile score they’re given relative to the SSAT-taking population over the past three years. These numbers are lower than national percentiles would be due to the over representation of strong performers in the pool.

Thank you!

are the percentiles compared to people in just your grade or everyone?

Your percentiles are only compared to people of the same grade and gender as you.
