Standing by with hugs, hot tea and marshmallow sandwiches

oh, dizzy… i’m still holding out for d-s… don’t give up hope just yet.

[ Picks a marshmallow out of gracey’s hand and shoves it up her nose. Whips out digital camera, takes a picture, uses as blackmail ]

I don’t think there are enough marshmallows in the world to float morale just now. Yesterday afternoon for a few hours I knew exactly what it must feel like to have been deferred – such a mixture of emotions for you kids.

There’s the overwhelming amount of new work to be faced; the tedium of senior year unmitigated by a punctuation mark of good news. If you’re unlucky enough to be the kid who is deferred in your class when someone else was accepted, you have to deal with that at school. The worst is listening to everyone tell you how this isn’t the end of the world and that there’s a reason, blah, blah, blah. Intellectually you know all these things are true, but none of them matter just now. You are numb but raw, all at the same time, and nothing helps.

I’m so sorry.

I just hope you don’t give up the great friendships and camaraderie you have built here – you’ve supported one another magnificently, and I see no reason for that to change. JMHO, of course.

Today I found out that the third girl who applied from my school got accepted - the other two of us were deferred. She’s a legacy… My parents attended UMich and MSU so that was no help.

I wholeheartedly second this - if one more person tries to reassure me with this I might… ice-cream-cone-them in the face. It’s much more comforting to hear a simple, “That sucks” than any sort of pitying justification of my later prospects. Thankfully, legacy-girl was (as of now) the only applicant admitted to any competitive school ED so we’re all commiserating together. Misery loves company.

What is your son doing to celebrate?

gracilisae –

well, he has finals, so not too much celebrating at the moment. Still has to graduate, you know! But I think he’s going to get his car washed so he can put his decal on it. He’s a very humble guy; he worked hard for this (as did all of you, those who were accepted and those deferred) and I think he is quietly going back over all the sacrifices he made these past several years and savoring the outcome.
