kaira07: I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully they see how much hard work you’ve put into this! and thanks(: btw, I also really liked the supplement. You just have to have fun with it, you know? I wrote about pizza and befriending slackers…I wish I knew more about aid for international students, though…can’t help there.

Jasonvdm: I’m thinking that means you have a really good shot, but they just want to weigh you out with everyone else… Good luck! I hope you get in(:

Thanks Natalie! Wow. That was your roommate essay I’m guessing? Mine’s just these random facts about me.

Kimathi- it’s good to know they didn’t reject you. Clearly, there’s hope. Yale results are out on Thursday. No wait, Wednesday 5 pm EST. That’s Thursday for me.

I’m a RD legacy applicant as well. And your classmate’s acceptance should have little if any influence on your decision. My school went 2/4 Stanford REA and I don’t see it as a negative for my application.

Natalie- Yeah I’d love to. And I’ve submitted my app so don’t worry. Mine was a lot more conventional!
Eiswein- I just kind of blanked on that one. Oh well. On to Princeton now!

^That’s why you never should submit something before a deadline unless there is a good reason to. Like when you take a final once you submit it you can leave, so there’s a reason to turn it in early. But why not just let the app sit on the computer and maybe inspiration will strike and you’ll be better off (assuming you can judge the relative quality of two essays)? Maybe it won’t, but you won’t be worse off by waiting until a few days before the deadline.

This isn’t rolling admissions. They’re not going to get back to you quicker, nor will they care when you submitted it. What’s the reason to submit it early? Were you 100% confident that you wouldn’t change anything? That’s a reason to email a teacher an essay early; because you know you’re at the “near-done” stage and wouldn’t have looked at it again but instead would have started the pset you’ve been procrastinating on.

This is why I never email an essay in the night before it’s due; some of my best thinking comes at night when I’m just lying in bed, and thinking about an essay in bed doesn’t take away from the pset because you can’t do psets in bed (you can do other things but I digress). I can come up with a lot of very quick fixes (like nice ways to phrase pesky ideas) that I can do in the morning to improve the essay.

Well my essay topic is undoubtedly less creative, but it’s about something that I truly found ‘intellectually engaging’. Besides, if you’ve done enough edits and are sure it’s how you want it, why not submit? Specially if there are other apps waiting. If I don’t keep submitting my apps, I might keep thinking of how to improve the essays I’ve done rather than focusing on the new ones. It’s just what works for me.

Well yeah if you’re sure that’s how you want it and aren’t gonna change it at all then go ahead. I find I don’t have to forcefully think about it, but for me like I was saying great essay ideas come before I fall asleep, so it’s not taking time away from other apps. And I’d be able to forget about the apps for a couple weeks and hope that inspiration strikes. But if you can’t do that then I guess then it makes sense to submit it when you’re pretty sure you’re done. I guess we all work a bit differently. Like I said in the first post you may have good reasons to submit it early and then it’s okay.

I could not agree more. Asides from getting things quicker, I did not benefit from submitting my application late August. I wasn’t even applying REA and I thought the sooner I finished the application, the less I would think about Stanford. Two to three months passed, I felt positive that I wouldn’t change a single essay. Yet shortly after I visited the campus, I wished I could have gone back and added things to the “Why Stanford?” essay. My application essays were too generic, but really…I learn from mistakes! It’s time to think about things that are actually within my control now!

PS: Yes, not too last minute through, you don’t want to submit during the server overtime or the last second of 12:59AM!

And so begins the wait. Just sent mine in. Approximately 3 months (judging by past years) until decisions come out… Anyone else scared out of their minds?
