Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

A question for all (to decrease the level of anxiety).
Is SAT or ACT useful in measuring one’s eligiblity for admission to a particular college. Yes, colleges are holistic but many colleges use scores to screen applicants. If you were to make a major change in the format of these standardized tests or in college admissions, what would it be? Maybe, till we wait for our decisions, we pinpoint a fault in current admission processes and suggest something better for future applicants.

@SteepDrag Nope, internationals get them also.

how much does a bad subject test score impact my decision??? ugh everything else in my app was perfect… i shouldn’t have submitted that test score… i just kind of felt like i had to since they “strongly recommend submitting 2 sat subject tests”

it sucks to be a poor international… Kinda sucks to not being able to go to your dream school… Congrats in advance to everybody that gets in, would’ve loved to spend the years with you

@intellectboy This might be an obvious one, but I don’t believe the standardized test scores reflect one’s intellectual abilities, natural talents, or academic performance, not in the slightest. A friend of mine who was an aspiring English major scored surprisingly low on both the SAT and the ACT. I still don’t know why, but it wasn’t because her reading comprehension and/or writing skills were poor. She was (and is) a superb writer, the best writer in the entire school, who had won DOZENS of prestigious literary awards and had been contacted by a major publisher in New York about her manuscript that she’d sent as a joke. Those who hadn’t seen her writing would always tell her that she could not possibly get into an Ivy or other equally prestigious colleges, but she did, and that was when I realized the standardized test scores did not necessarily indicate one’s chances of getting into such-and-such schools.

Does anyone know if Stanford offers to pay for domestic travel for admitted students to attend admitted students’ weekend?

@dazedaura I’m honestly not sure if SAT II subject scores are really gonna make or break an admission. I mean there are so many components to an application so I’m not sure if subject test scores are really looked at

@Puppylove1 They did last year. I’m not sure what the financial threshold was, but S was flown out.

@Puppylove1 Stanford has given me a $350 travel grant for Admit Weekend, and I come from a middle income household (~60000)

Did you ask Stanford for it or did they email/ask you about it? @theglowingdragon

@Alamom and @theglowingdragon , thank you both.

@abigails98 , I haven’t asked. D was admitted to another school where they offered to pay for her travel to admitted students’ weekend. I was simply wondering if Stanford does the same and under what circumstances.

@Puppylove1 - I believe they do it if you have applied for and have been granted financial aid.

@dazedaura my D didn’t submit her subject test bc they weren’t up to par but she got into Stanford early decision. I think Stanford looks st the whole picture, not just test scores. Her ACT and SAT scores were high though, but I bet you will still be fine.

What date and around what time do admission decisions come out?

Decisions are released on 3/31 @ 4PM PST. Good luck!

@Bulldog9 March 31 and I think it’s 3 or 4 california time (so either 6 or 7 eastern?) i know the date is correct but i’m not so sure on the time

The time has been moved to 4 pm PST (7 pm EST).

Sometimes the decisions are released PTSD.
