Stanford Class of 2023 Discussion

Agreed @Jleto18 , we literally will never have any way of knowing for sure until decisions come out and and filling this thread with tinhat conspiracy theories is just unnecessary. It’s also clearly stressing a lot of people out for no reason, and making people doubt themselves and worry potentially very unnecessarily.

My SAT/ACT date didn’t change.

I don’t really buy into the portal change theory but here are my stats anyway.

Major: Psychology
Academics: 4.32 (W) / 3.90 (UW) / 34 ACT / Molecular Bio 770 / Math 2 760

ECs: President of a club centered around psych/neuro, vp of an honor society, did some research at Stanford (completely unrelated to my major), part of youth council for our district in my city, a lot of tutoring (some with kids in my school, some with underprivileged kids), care giver for my autistic brother, created a program centered around bio/chem for kids in my local middle school, hospital volunteering, part of a psych/neuro related outside organization (didn’t really do anything in it)

1st teacher rec: Really Good
2nd rec: I’m guessing super generic. They wrote a summer program rec for me that I got into so maybe not that bad.

Hooks: None.

Essays: Pretty ■■■■ imo, why did I waste $90 applying

For my school, I’m pretty par for the course. Our school regularly has a couple of people who are accepted (always been <10) and there were already like 2-3 accepted ED and were mostly sciency people. I submitted my app super late (like 1-2 hours before the deadline) so maybe thats related to why my date didn’t change?

I haven’t been paying that much attention to the theories regarding this issue but I just checked my portal and the date changed to today’s. What does that mean?

(I’m an international BTW)

I’m an applicant from Indiana and my date changed to 3/18/19

There are WAY too many people with this date thing for it to mean acceptance. This is Stanford everyone. We are not all getting in.

The glitch either is just a glitch and randomly happens or maybe it means a decision was made one way or the other. It could also mean that’s the date some admissions clerk verified your scores manually.

What I seriously doubt is that we will find out down the road that everyone with the glitch got in, or everyone without the glitch got in. There are just way too many people in each of these camps for a school that will have a sub 5% acceptance rate.

So I would suggest we all just relax. We will know soon enough.

@bigchungus785 i hope so too

@putinator pray for me too

Have any of you guys tried registering for admit weekend? When I tried it, “Access Denied” Came up.

Yes and its probably because we havent been admitted/rejected yet.

Decisions haven’t been uploaded to the server yet…

So apparently, the guy who made a reddit post about “demystifying” the Stanford application process who also “called” the admissions office about the theory (in which he said apparently change = moved on) deleted his post and his account…lol.

@TheBeyonder Yeah, he deleted it 5 minutes after I commented that he had claimed he had a change in March,
but also claimed the complete opposite. I also pointed out that, shortly before posting his thread, he had asked others to call Stanford because he could not do so, probabaly an attempt to make people nervous and get them to call Stanford for him.

He also deleted all of his comments on reddit and cleared his history, probably so that people cannot confirm the quotes of him I used in my post.

Also, someone actually emailed the admissions office (you can find the post on reddit). The admissions office said:

“Hello,

Thank you for writing. We have also noticed the date changes, and we are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible. The date changes are isolated to the SAT or ACT checklist item and are not related to any other process in the system.”

Honestly, I do not believe that. Also, I have read every single theory I found on college confidential and on reddit. People really put theories in their favor so that they are less worried. #NoChangers will say it is positive, #Changers will say the opposite. And that is because deep inside, we want to believe that, not because it is true. I mean I have had no change but am very aware that this means my app wasn’t handeled, thus no change, thus very likely a rejection. Does that make me sad? Yes. Is there still time for my portal to change? Yes. But in the end, it is very unlikely.

Another cool hypothesis I saw was that different date changes mean that different regions were handeled at different times. A lot of internationals saw changes recently (17, 18 or 19). Please also note that people had their portal changed on the 17th, a Sunday. I mean, vcome on. It is unlikely they work on that day. I assume there might be a delay in the system, so a change on Sunday could come from a decision on Friday. I know from other colleges that slate does take some time to update.

@classic10 LOL. I do have to wonder tho, why would he be afraid to call the admissions office? I had to call UPenn’s admissions office like a month ago just because they never sent me my portal. They were nice and straight-forward. Seems like he was trying to bamboozle everyone with false information. (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

@TheBeyonder Yeah, I don’t know what his problem is or why he would ruin everybody’s day in a few seconds. I hate those people.

Well, I wouldn’t say “hate”, its a strong word ┐(‘~`;)┌. In reality, we are all very confused regarding this admissions process, and what everyone needs is a sliver of hope, no matter how tedious or menial it may be, for this final stretch of college admissions. ヽ( ´ ∇ ` )ノ

Does anyone know when the decisions are coming out?!??

@waterinthesink I believe the best guess is March 29 based on previous years but we don’t know for sure yet.

Anyone apply to Stanford’s earth science program? Any insight into how competitive it is?

@ahling Usually very competitive like the entire college. Heres the scale in which they determine applicants usually at these selective schools:

SCALE - 1 - Best of the Best → 5 - Red Flag

4 Categories (5 for Ivies):

Academics:

  • 1 : genuine scholar, perfect scores (36 ACT, 1600 SAT), top of class, Amazing GPA (Above 4.4 Fully Weighted GPA), published papers, national awards for academics
  • 2: Amazing scores (32-36 ACT) and GPA (Above ~4.4 Fully Weighted GPA)
  • 3: Good scores (28-32 ACT) and GPA (Above 4.00 GPA)
  • 4: Mediocre scores (22-28 ACT) and GPA
  • 5: Red Flag scores (Below average ACT/SAT and GPA)

Extracurriculars

  • 1: Unique ECs (Business founders, abroad internships, published papers, national athletes, school board member, non-profit organization owners, and etc.)
  • 2: Exceptional ECs (ASB President, State-level athletics, city symphony instrumentalist / scholarship instrumentalists, Marching Band Conductor, Club Founders)
  • 3: Good ECs (Varsity Sports Captain, Robotics, Hospital volunteer, 300+ hours Community Service, Club Officers/Presidents)
  • 2: Average ECs (Sports, Music, Clubs, Community Service)
  • 1: Red Flag (no ECs, or stuff you did in middle school or elementary)

Personal Qualities

  • 1: Celebrity-like (Genuine and demonstrated concern for societal issues, ambitious to create change, passionate about making the world a better place)
  • 2: Model-student (Passionate and caring towards others. Seeks knowledge for a genuine passionate for learning and not for a grade. Leader in his/her high school and shows humility)
  • 3: The “Good” Student (Passionate, Caring, and demonstrated a need for learning and personal growth)
  • 4: The Average Student (Shows interest in college and success, but only applies for the prestige of the college. Does not pursue knowledge for personal growth, but rather, for possible success in a career)
  • 5: The “Red flag” student (Disregard for others, overly “braggy”, holds views that shows disregard for morality)

Essays:

  • 1: Very compelling essay. Demonstrates and confirms all of the 3 categories above and shows the uniqueness of a student, their ability to overcome, create, endure, love, and be greater than their struggles
  • 2: Masterfully written original essays
  • 3: Good essays that conveys a student’s passions and their love for learning
  • 4: Personal stories of everyday life, mostly unoriginal.
  • 5: Essays that conveys worrisome personal character, or shows little to no attempt to correct grammer.

Recommendations (Usually in Ivy league admissions, but not UCs)

  • 1: Unusual support from recommendations (One of the best students in years…The best student ever…)
  • 2: Very strong support from recommendations (Best student…Loves to learn for personal growth and has done things to influence their community/peers…)
  • 3: Good support from recommendations (Good student…Learns with a passion…)
  • 4: Average, generic recommendation
  • 5: recommendations that conveys bad/worrysome personal qualities regarding a student.

Hooks (Not a category but could influence your application positively):

  • First Generation Student
  • Legacy (Ivies)
  • Athletes
  • Minority
  • Success regardless of personal struggles

Note: If you score a average of 2 or 2.5, your chances of being admitted to a selective school is very high. If you score around a 1-2, this is generally the range for Ivy League level students.

my portal just changed from 1/3 to 1/5 after refreshing the page.
