Congratulations to those who made it to Stanford class of 2028. My DD is an aspiring high school junior trying to decide whether to EA to Stanford or play it safe and ED to another Ivy locally. Her stats are very high 1500s, all As, 14 APs and all 5s so far. Varsity soccer and has a fairly strong STEM extracurricular.

Thank you in advance for all your suggestions and advice.

No one is “playing it safe” with an ED application to an Ivy. Choosing an ED or REA school should come after a lot of research into different schools.

You should start your own thread if you want to solicit opinions on the matter.

My son very surprisingly was admitted to Stanford yesterday. Totally shocked. Did not expect this at all. Ivy day was brutal
rejected Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, and Duke. Waitlisted Cornell and Dartmouth. Accepted only at Penn. Had previous acceptances at Georgetown, Notre Dame, UVA, UNC, and in-state 7 year BS/MD. Had no expectation for Stanford at all. So many other waitlists.
Good luck to everyone, this process was so rough. Feel very blessed right now.

Wow, such a helpful advise. Thank you!

My daughter did not ED anywhere because she didn’t have a clear “dream school” and wanted to see how she’d do if she used a shotgun approach and applied to multiple Ivies/Ivy+. When we first started this process, her dream school was Cornell. Then after about a year, she decided her dream school was Penn. She couldn’t decide where to ED or if to ED, so she decided to REA so she wouldn’t be obligated to attend any particular school. She REA’d at Harvard thinking she’d probably get deferred, but she’d give it a try. No interview in REA or RD - just a deferral. Probably a waste of her REA, but I guess it didn’t hurt anything. Then she got a likely letter from Columbia, so we were 100% sure that she’d just go there as it was probably going to be the only Ivy/Ivy+ that admitted her. Boy, were we wrong. Ivy day came along with acceptances at Cornell (with a Tepper Dean’s Scholar research grant), Dartmouth, Penn, Princeton, and of course Columbia. Waitlist at Brown and Duke. Rejected at Harvard and Yale. So now we had a dilemma, and she wondered if Princeton would be the way to go since it’s one of the “God tier” schools (her term for Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, MIT and Yale), and Stanford. She had no expectations for Stanford, and she didn’t even want to open her decision because “it sucks to get a rejection as your last decision” so we all about had a stroke when the letter had confetti streaming down. Long story short: don’t assume you won’t get in somewhere, and only ED if it’s really the kid’s first choice and they’d be ok not knowing if they had a chance elsewhere.

Huge congrats on all of her acceptances. Is she planning to attend Stanford or is she still deciding?

My son was in a similar position at the beginning. He didn’t want to ED as his first choice program at the time was the Columbia/Trinity College Dublin dual BA program, which doesn’t offer ED.

He fell in love with Stanford but didn’t ever think he’d get in. He decided to REA there because why not? Much to his elation, he was accepted REA. He was pretty sure he’d attend but wasn’t 100% sure, and there were other programs he wanted to consider, including the dual BA program mentioned above.

Fast forward, he was admitted to the dual BA and to a fabulous full-ride scholarship but rejected at Yale and waitlisted at Brown. By the end of the process, he realized for sure that he would not pick the dual BA or Brown over Stanford. With a lot of thought, he also decided that the full-ride program wasn’t for him. Yale was the only other school he would have seriously considered.

So with the Yale rejection, the decision was v easy – Stanford 2028! He’s over the moon.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I will convey these to my DD. I recently became aware of a person I know who got accepted to Princeton but was waitlisted at Penn and Cornell. This person really wanted to go to Princeton - so it worked out. However, if Princeton wouldn’t have worked out, this person would have rued not ED-ing to Penn.

There’s no guarantee this student would have gotten in to Penn with an ED app. Lots of kids every year get accepted to Elite school A and denied or waitlisted at Elite School B, C, and D. That’s why you should only ED to your 100% number one school. If you don’t have a true #1 school and you want to wait and compare multiple acceptances, do NOT apply ED.

I have the same situation
Daughter at MIT, son deferred then rejected at MIT
Like your son he also has Stanford, Princeton and U Penn M&T program
He has no clue what to do now
Our hearts were at MIT
this 2 siblings get along and respect each other
What are guys considering
We are having a hard time making an informed decision

Hey guys! For waitlisted students at Stanford, did you receive any particular questions posted on your portal as it used to be last year?

On my portal, I only have a form with 500 characters limit. Anyone who has questions?

I also only have the 500 characters.

There doesn’t seem to be much posted from waitlisted students. Only a few students posted on that forum.

Same choices

This this still true?

“The deadline to commit to Stanford is Wednesday, May 1 .”
