I was rejected along with all of you other guys/gals, and I know I had a very decent chance. The funny thing is, judging from all your guys’s stats and my own, it’s lke Stanford rejected extremely qualified people and accepted mediocre people, legacies, and URMs. Hey Stanford, just because I’m not a URM, nor will my family be able to give you billions of dollars, its no reason to reject/accept someone. Yes, I’m bitter. I’m bitter after reading these posts and from my own observations. If Stanford keeps up their ridiculous policy about legacies and URMs, it’s going to lose whatever rep. it has so far.

cookiemon,
I’m not sure what you are talking about because there are plenty of urm’s and legacies that either were deferred or rejected. Check the threads more carefully. My stats were above 2300/4.5 GPA and I’m a urm and was deferred. Don’t take it out on the people accepted. Show some dignity.

Jeeze…looking through this thread…Stanford rejected some seriously qualified students. My chances seem pretty damn abysmal now. I don’t know how you guys manage to pull off 8/9/10+ AP courses. I’d probably go insane.

To make no mention of the hindrances that would place on football watching, facebook time, and partying.

guitars101, people with stats better than that, and i’m just talking about what you’ve given here, have been outright rejected, and is it just a coincidence that they are not URM or legacy?

I think that Stanford looks to fill its class early with “special” people. i.e. qualified legacies, URM’s, athletes, and other “unique personalitites” that they feel they need to balance their class.

Decision: Deferred

- Teacher Recs: One was good while the other was plain
- Counselor Rec: generic
- Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): N/A
- Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): Being a representative in my community and holding an appointed leadership position on a board for my city. Strong leadership in and out of school.

Location/Person:

- School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Top 25 Public in state
- Ethnicity: White
- Gender: M
- Income Bracket: Middle?.
- Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
- Strengths: I thought my class rank and ACT were strong. I had solid leadership in EC’s
- Weaknesses: My SAT scores were probably my biggest weakness
- Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: SAT I and my uniqueness. I think I’m too normal to get in. Nothing really that special about me other then being moderately intelligent. I’m white, middle income, wealthy suburb, no legacy? I mean I see some kids getting deferred who I thought I was more qualified than but my essays must have been weak…who knows?

Other Factors: Being white didn’t really help.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I was pretty sad when it happened but o’well. I see plenty of kids more qualified than me getting rejected soo…w/e. It is so arbitrary so no one really knows. Hopefully I’ll get into some other schools? Good luck to those who did get in.

D accepted, will do stat thing latter, but some basic ones:

SAT 1 =2290
Sat II = 2340
GPA uw 3.95 or so
Private school
school does not rank
reco’s not seen
Only SCEA from her school, several will do RD

Hook Recruited Athlete

For those who were athletes who did not get in, where you recruited or did you attempt to be recruited? I don’t have any direct knowledge, but if you spent time doing a sport and were very good (as it appears for a number of folks above) and you had no desire to try and play for Stanford, it seems to me it would reduce the value of the sport in your application.

In reply to cookiemon90 and guitar101. Stanford puts most of its emphasis on diversity, much more than any other top university. Evig was right when he/she said they care about filling with special people in SCEA. To be honest, if you don’t like Stanford’s policy of diversity why did you apply there? They are roughly 7% international and 53% minority right now and that is not going to change. I got rejected and yeah I’ve seen half a dozen posts on here that were accepted that I feel I was stronger than. Is it a coencidence that many of those were URMs? No. Am I mad about it? Not really. Is it right? That’s an entirely different argument. I knew diversity meant a lot to Stanford and I was hoping to be a part of it but I wasn’t able to. There are plenty of good universities where you can get a good degree and earn a good living. Stanford is just one.

P.S. Cookiemon, Stanford can select smart white kids from its regular pool w/ 2300+/4.5 gpa. Why would they commit to those type of kids in SCEA when they are a dime a dozen? Stanford is going to remain a top university as long as 2300+/4.5 gpa kids keep applying there in the hundreds. Sorry bud.

Decision: Accepted

Also knowing and accepting that I am quirky, but still very much a normal high school student who did more in life than prepare for college.[/li][/ul]General Comments[ul] Congratulations to everyone who got in. I am sorry for everyone who did not, but just remember that wherever you go, you will be happy.

guitars 101, I was just addressing your conversation with him. I was agreeing w/ you as well. Is that person from mizzou a joke post or not it seems fishy b/c i didn’t think stanford did interviews?

baseballpat4, I agree with you about the posting of coolrunnings89. He posted “accepted” in “Official MIT Class of 2012 Early Action Decisions Thread” also.

Cookiemon, I am a double legacy and had very strong scores/etc. and I did not get in. I was deferred.

Just think about that for a second.

same here.

cookiemoon, with ur kind of attitude, i think Stanford was right not to accept you. You obviously cant take adversities very well nor are you very resilient. Life is not fair. Its amazing to me that you havent learnt that lesson. Im sorry for being so critical but you have to realize that 1) Stanford is not everything 2)life is not about getting into top universities

Shinjin,
You know if your legacy is strong your the first in the pile though ;)

All kinds of people got rejected
All kinds of people got accepted
Admissions look strongly at fit
They feel they have done this long enough and know their school well enough to know if this applicant or that applicant would fit in with the culture of their school
Stats play a part in that
Not the entire part
I am going to trust that what I put down on my app did not give Stanford admissions enough evidence that I would fit in with their culture
Perhaps, if I had highlighted something else or had written about another topic… blah blah…
but that didn’t happen
From here, if you have been rejected, it means there is another school out there seeking you and believes you are great for their community
Then, if you still feel Stanford is the best school for you and your current school does not give you what you need, try transferring
