Star Wars movie -- The Force Awakens

We are having a rare family event (S3 is 30 and DD is 27) on Christmas. An earlier dinner and an evening Star Wars movie. Something new for us since this year it is just the 4 of us home. I like that you can get reserved seats now. No long lines.

I haven’t seen it yet, but my 24-year-old son did and posted on Facebook, “I cried tears and jumped around a lot.”

@NJTheatreMom, my 32 yr old S posted on social media that it was like The Notebook for nerds. Similar reactions!

I’ve seen it twice already, second time in IMAX 3D. It’s fantastic. I loved the call back to A New Hope but still making it seem fresh. I especially loved Rey. I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was a child, and the only thing missing for me was an awesome female force user. Rey is everything I’ve been waiting for and I am so happy she was able to be capable to the very end.

I wasn’t bothered by the heavy references to A New Hope, as they were deftly done. The film still felt fresh to me. I am really looking forward to Rian Johnson’s take on the next chapter. I loved Looper and Brick.

D was very concerned about spoilers ruining the movie for her, so we went to the theater–all 4 of us. We all enjoyed it and now the kids don’t have to worry about it being discussed but cause its highly likely to be mentioned by fans over the holidays.

Really, really enjoyed The Force Awakens. I saw it again this past weekend and it got me pumped enough to break out the original trilogy and watch that again… and of course that got me wanting to see the new Disneyland attraction when it comes out!

It did make me a little sad the way they set the tone to phase out the classic star characters, including Han, Leia, C3PO and R2. You get the feeling while you’re watching the movie how insignificant they are now, and how the “new generation” (Rey, Fin, BB8) are faster, younger, better, etc. Even though this was a little emotional, I liked how they did it.

Overall, good movie… Can’t wait for episode VIII

Also, for anyone who hasn’t seen the Star Wars SNL skit, it is hilarious…

I knew it! Luke’s not the father!

I vote that Rey is Anakin & Padme’s triplet offspring who was secretly hidden in cryogenic suspended animation.

She could be a clone. Then she wouldn’t have “parents.” It just seems unlikely that she’s not related to anybody we’ve seen–that just violates the normal law of conservation of characters. How about this: She’s the grandchild (by a previously unknown–to us–child of Luke’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. That would make Luke her first cousin once removed (I think).

I remember Maz Kanata telling Rey that whomever she is waiting for on Jakuu, they are never coming back.

Part of me thinks her backstory is going to be clever, rather than obvious… Perhaps she was one of Luke’s padawans who was lucky to escape before Kylo slaughtered them.

My (totally made up) theory is also that she at least was supposed to have been one of Luke’s students (maybe not quite old enough, but bad guys tracked down everyone Luke had identified as force sensitive; this could be traced to the spin off canon – the cartoons had episodes in which there was a database of babies with the force and the bad guys were trying to get the list to steal them as infants). I think that we will find out eventually that Kylo spared her life when her parents/foster parents were taken away from Jakuu. There seems to be a flashback suggesting that she has seen Kylo before. I don’t think she’s related to anyone, unless it is some minor supporting-character Jedi (where you go – “oh yeah, I remember that guy”). Who’s up for a Kylo/Ren/Fenn love triangle? Twoo luv saves Kylo!

I am still hoping she is Emperor Palpatine’s lovechild.

I think she’s Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter.

Yes, I know that Jedi are not supposed to have relationships or children, but maybe Obi-Wan, during his long exile on Tattooine, felt that he was no longer really a Jedi (in a manner of speaking). So he might have had a relationship, which led to the birth of a child. And a generation later, that child had a daughter, whom we know as Rey, although I doubt that is the name she was given at birth.

Of course, I’m usually wrong about these things.

Rey’s roots revealed

I hope that’s not a real leak–it sounds dopey. Of course, the midichlorians are dopey, too.
