State Schools as academic safeties with BM in Voice

In our case, my two VP daughters worked with a voice professor at our local, smaller state university. This prof was able to connect them with/suggest professors at other universities as they were going through local/regional voice competitions and the auditions. They also met professors through these competitions—we pretty much stuck to local/state ones like our state’s school music association competition and our state’s National Association of Teachers of Singing competition. But there are a lot of others out there like Schmidt Vocal Arts and the CS Vocal Competition. My oldest also attended a summer program where she met professors. Once they narrowed down the list of schools to which they were applying, they used to schools’ websites to get contact info for profs who they then contacted for sample lessons or shadowing. I will say that my oldest really didn’t get serious about connecting with profs until after auditioning. She didn’t know a single prof personally before her audition at the university she ended up attending–IU Jacobs. It was a different world before Covid and not as many profs did virtual lessons. But now just about everyone is comfortable having a virtual lesson with someone half a world away…. I also recommend joining the Vocal Performance Parents group on Facebook. It’s a great resource for connecting with parents with kids in programs all over the US and beyond who can give program and prof recommendations etc.

Thanks so much! We’re in NYC, I’m not aware of any local/regional voice competitions, like an NYC specific thing, but maybe I just haven’t been looking for I! I’ll join the FB group, thank you!

Try googling nyssma and sleuthing about. We are in Indiana and the issma hosts regional and state solo voice festivals–kids perform and receive evaluations so not exactly a competition but does provide good feedback. I believe entry is dependent upon a middle/high school teacher though…. As far as NATS–NY has several chapters, but I think to be eligible to compete your voice teacher has to be a member–not sure of your student’s situation there….at least I believe it’s that way in IN.
