stateside sponsor/guardians

Hi. I’ll be going to boarding school in the fall and as I’m an international student, I was told to provide a stateside contact. The thing is, my family does not have any ties with anyone who resides in the US so I’m having a huge trouble trying to find someone… anyone know where I should look?

(I’ve posted this in the international student section but received no reply)

Thanks :D

Why not email or call your school and discuss it? Probably start with Admissions. I’m sure they have been asked this question before and will know what to do.

As you probably know, people are on vacation now. If you would like an answer in the near future, call your school to find out who is around.

If this is just an emergency contact, you may look up for a day student. His/her family should be able to help. I would agree to be someone’s emergency contact, which may very likely end up not getting used for the whole four years.

I have a friend from middle school there, so should I ask her to ask her parents about being the ‘guardian’ for me? For what type of reasons would they use to call them for emergency? Medical?

Not every international student knows someone in the US. You are not alone in your question. Talk to admissions; ask what they recommend in such a case.

And don’t feel that you have to fill in every blank on every form. You’ve been admitted; provide what you can, leave the rest blank. If its is a “show stopper”, the school will get back to you.

Well I talked to admissions… didn’t really help much, as they just asked me to search educational consultants in my area. I’ve already done so, and they all said that they don’t offer any guardianship services or whatever… so I’m kind of stuck here. Why do international students need them? My friends in other schools told me that they weren’t required for them… Hmm.

Something is fishy here. US prep schools don’t usually required legal guardianship by someone in the states. They are in the international education business. Is there something different about your school?

well it’s not actually a ‘legal’ guardianship that they require. they just want to have someone they’ll be able to have contact with to act as a liason between the school and parents. its interlochen arts academy btw. i guess it’s cause most of the international students come in with english being their second language (not the case for me) so i guess its cause most of the international students have non-english speaking parents? ughh i don’t know… this is very common in the UK as well, so i guess i’m not the only one? it’s just really frustrating cause we don’t know anyone there lol and this is compulsory…
