Stats vs. Calc II?

Any advice on whether to take Statistics or Calc II? Taking Calc I right now with an A so far. Heard that both are difficult. Also, which Professors would you recommend?

It depends on your intended major. Stat sans calc doesn’t count for a few mathy majors (you’d need MATH/STAT 312 which is stat with calc). Calc II is pretty hard at UVA, I hadn’t heard the same thing about stat though. Why do you want to continue in math? You only need 12 credits between math and science combined. Calc II is a prereq for many further math classes if you are liking math a lot, but like I said it is a hard class so I would not want it to ruin your GPA if you don’t even need any more math. Reply back with your intended major so we can better advise you.

Working towards fulfilling the prerequisites for medical school. Not sure what major yet. Planning Chem 1420 with lab, Spanish 2010, a humanities class and second required math course.

I dunno I guess I would recommend stat then, since you’ll probably get a good grade in that, and you can always go back and take calc 2 later once you’re done your premed stuff if you end up needing it for your major. stat is pretty interesting anyways.

Stat 2120 has had a series of bad profs. A new adjunct prof is teaching it in the spring, so maybe this is the time to take it.

My son said he heard that Stat 2020 Intro to Biostatistics is better, particularly for people interested in health care. However, that course is not offered next semester. It was offered most previous semesters.

Note that there are some majors that require a second semester of calculus, including economics. Some other majors strongly recommend a second semester of calc.
