Your son is so lucky to be able to apply to such a large number of schools, and that he has several acceptances already! My daughter’s bff has zero acceptances, only applied to 10 schools, has no ED apps because she can’t afford it, and wants to attend her huge state flagship as her number 1 choice. Hard when some people use that state flagship as just another school in their huge list of schools. I’m so sorry about your son’s rejection, but he sounds like he has wonderful home support (and bf support!), and I’m sure he has many more acceptances coming his way.
S25 admitted for biochem with $11K presidential merit. We haven’t visited yet but it’s looking like SB and Pitt will be top contenders. Honors will definitely be a determining factor. Wish we could find out sooner than later.
Daughter admitted. OOS. 3.6uw/3.95w GPA. 1360. 14H/3AP (by end jr year). not sure what she put as her specific major but it would be something along lines of Asian studies/Korean minor or global/International studies. presidential scholarship 5k/year for 4 years
Congrats! Is it $11k/year?
Sorry, yes. $11K per year. That’s in line with what she was offered by U Buffalo ($12K) and Binghamton ($15K) per year for four years. We are oos.
daughter also accepted OOS to Binghamton. When did you hear about aid from them? We have not heard anything. We got the aid offer from SBU in the acceptance letter.
Bing sent the aid offer a couple of weeks after the admissions decision. Still unclear when they’ll send news about honors after speaking with admissions, Harpur, and the honors office. That kind of runaround never makes a great impression. Stony Brook seems to lay out expectations a little better on its website.
My D25 was also accepted but waiting to hear about the honors program. OOS math major with $13k/year scholarship. So happy she heard before the 1/31 date. (also admitted into UPitt Honors, and awaiting on 2 others, plus 4-7 applications being submitted this month)
Kind of disappointed by the small amount of EA decisions sent on the 13th - I submitted all of my information way before the Nov 1st deadline (as I’m also applying to Simons STEM Scholars) and my application is still “awaiting decision”. Guess I just have to wait another month and a half
Yes it seems so… we applied way early too. I think they have reviewed most of the early applicants but just chose to give decisions on the top candidates or in state. My kid was very much interested in SBU but with this let down and 2 other acceptances, has moved on. mentally from SBU. It would have been fine if they had just stuck to the original deadline or release on a rolling basis after the first batch.
It seems really random to me, honestly. It’s definitely not by area or even school - I know people in my school who were admitted already and we’re all in-state. I think it was completely based on whichever files they picked up first.
If SBU wasn’t my second choice school, I would definitely share the same sentiment as your kid. It seems really unfair to me that they would release some decisions early and not others with no rhyme or reason about it. I really do wish they had just waited until the original deadline for everyone.
Did anyone else get an email to visit the campus? No acceptance yet though… so confused.
Did anyone get an update to the portal requesting mid-year grades? It says nothing about a deferral, and when I emailed to ask they never used the word. I’m really scared that they’re deferring me without even letting me know 100% which is really scummy… I applied to honors programs so I guess this means I just didn’t get into them (because you need to apply EA). My portal still says I’m considered for EA decisions so I’m really confused…
Yes. just got one today. Hopefully, it is good sign for acceptance.
Sorry about that. No update on portal for son. it happened to my kid for Uni of Pitt. Basically, we took it as a soft deferral till we update the gradesl.
Could they want the mid-year grades to decide on Honors, but not for overall acceptance?
The deadline for all required materials for Priority Honor consideration was Nov1. Some colleges give acceptance first and then dole out honors. Not sure how SBU does it. Regardless, if the first term grades are available, it could be sent in the meantime. Our school sent out Term 1 grade report in end of Nov.
I have no idea, they really gave me like no info when I asked I believe they only consider for honors if you get into the school itself, so I’m not sure why they’d do that, but it’s possible?
They got my first quarter grades already - they want my mid-year grades, which don’t come out until like February
no…I did not get that? mine only has test scores, recs, and transcripts and still reads “awaiting decisions” sorry though I hope they fix that :]
but I did not apply to honors and cannot change my honors prefs anymore
