AOI means he/she isn’t directly admitted into major due to space constraints so for Computer Science they have to obtain a 3.2 GPA in the CS classes with no single grade below a B- in order to be admitted…so there is an element of risk…for more info you can go to the CS department page in the Stony Brook website.
@SpaceshipDad ~Very happy for you! Congratulations to you and your D!! My D has the same high GPA as your D, but her SAT is lower. Stony Brook is her top choice.
…Can you please tell me if the Stony Brook application portal had similar precursory changes right before the acceptance was received, like the Bing portal did?
~Thank you!
@SpaceshipDad Congrats on your D getting into all the SUNYs…although my son got into Bing Watson…Stony is probably my son’s top choice because of his interest in engineering. He sent in the apps 10/29 which was later than your D so still anxiously waiting…
We did not notice anything different before. We just received the email and that was it. After receiving the email we checked the portal and saw the Congratulations message and asking us to check into SOLAR.
Stony Brook definitely has a better and more well known Comp Sci program over Binghamton Watson by every measurable metric. Having said that, Binghamton is an excellent school and I believe it comes down to fit. As a family you have to decide if your child will be happier going to Watson or Stony Brook CS because if your child is miserable at Stony Brook, then maybe he/she won’t even be able to pass or do well in the Comp Sci classes and drop out of the program; if that happens then who cares if Stony Brook is better than Watson in CS?
I applied to Stony Brook during the winter break. Do you know how soon after you submit the application via Common App to get access to the SB portal? Is it just a couple of days or a long wait?
Answering the question of @orm2022 and @soontobeprepmom … I think it took 3 days to receive the email with the info to get into the secure application status portal. Hope you receive it soon.
