Streaming Services - NewChoices

I still want the ‘home’ phone number. It’s the one I give out to businesses - they can leave a message. I cut the phone from my cable bundle a few years ago and bought a MagicJack - $35/year allows me to keep a number that my elders still call and to share with businesses.
I more recently cut the cord and pay for internet only plus Hulu live, but rarely watching anything live (except baseball playoffs). I’m reconsidering now with the price hike.
Anyone know if regular Hulu gets me access to day after viewing of major network shows?

^ Highly recommend you switch. PM me if you have any questions about setting it up.

We’ve got regular Hulu for now (our promo price expires this week), and for most shows we can watch the next day. Hulu doesn’t have CBS shows though.

I haven’t read the whole thread so apologies if this was answered already: do you mean with Verizon unlimited data for cell phones you can get Disney + free or is it with Verizon Fios for TV? Because we have unlimited data for our phones, but I paid for Disney+ a few days ago (love it btw, even though they don’t have The Three Lives of Thomasina LOL).

Free with unlimited for one year.

I get shows like Grey’s Anatomy the next day.

@collage1 even on Comcast standards you are over paying for what you have. I have to guess you are paying around $100/month for taxes, fees, rentals. Let that sink in bit. This is what made me act.

I bet you can easily save around $175/month switching to steaming or more. This would be without losing any channels and gaining sports channels.

But keep in mind that Firesticks etc go on sale on the internet on black Friday and you can save about 50%.

There are also audio/video installers that would be more then happy to take your money to set you up if you or someone else can’t do it for you. It’s actuality pretty easy.

You can also get something like a Firestick add Hulu live or the like and try it out without canceling your service. If you don’t like it then send it back and cancel your subscription. No 2 year commitment like Comcast. Plus you can still talk into the remote to get a movie or channel…

If your willing I will guide you but will need answers to more specific questions about what shows are important to both of your specifically? You can PM me also.

Also have you ever used something like Netflix?

Do you have a wireless router that reaches where all your tvs are located.? You can download an app on your phone to test the signal. You can turn off your phone provider on your phone ie:t-mobile and just turn on your wifi on the phone and see if you can reach the internet easily
You can also use the speed test app that I reference above on your phone to tests. If that’s good then you can move forward.

I don’t agree that 100 is to much. It all depends on the size of your house and speed to your tvs. Yes less can be sufficient and sometimes not. Sometimes you have to use inexpensive repeater that plug into a wall to increase the wifi in that room.

You might also just want to see what Comcast will offer you to stay. They are losing millions of subscribers so the call might be worth it. Just don’t get locked into some 2 year deal. Also for autopay for only 4 tvs and a quad dvr with wireless modem /router rental you should be paying a lot less, even on their standards.

Some word today that a zillion new Disney+ users have been hacked? I only caught a few words about that.

Fios with LL was costing 208/mo. dropping back to LL and web only plus Sling costs about $125. Right there, about 1k saved annually.

Are Roku and the Firestick basically the same?

Practically speaking, 100 canbe fine. At max, we have two tvs, three cells and 3 laptops running. The issue can be whether your service is providing consistent quality speeds. I do have an issuein my neighborhood, with Verizon, despite their protests.

I put in my own modem and router. Without changing anything on the provider side my speeds were faster then what they stated I was getting after that. . Use the speed tests to clarify. So many people never get what they are paying for.

There were reasons I didn’t go with roku that I don’t remember but I have an Amazon prime account so with a Firestick things like movies and music are free. They actually have some great shows and movies also. Miss Maisel won like just about every award last year. Something like 16 emmys.

@Knowsstuff, thanks for your kind offer to help. I’m going to call xfinity to see if they’ll reduce my rate w/o a 2 year commitment. If I’m not successful, I’ll PM you.

“You might also just want to see what Comcast will offer you to stay. They are losing millions of subscribers so the call might be worth it.”

I tried that back in January with zero results. I’m usually good at negotiating (was a big pat of my carer) but had no luck with Comcast/Xfinity despite being a loyal 20 customer. Their pricing for new vs old customers burns my britches. Since I have no other internet option, I’m stuck for that with them which gives me less options than people elsewhere. Interestingly enough, and a further source of irritation, when I got to the point I want to drop cable, I got hung up on TWICE! They must incentivize their phone people on retention rates and they didn’t want my dropping service in their stats. I’m sure those jobs suck but they apparently give their phone reps little room to offer much, in my experience. The only offer I got was to reduce fees with a lower package, no other price break. I really dislike the company and wish I had another option for internet.

Good luck!

@doschicos. Totally sucks but you can go online to your account and cancel without talking to someone. I have actually found the chatting help more responsive and helpful. When calling just ask for a retention person. Get past the first person quickly.

Where I live I do have choices and can play the switching game but it’s a pain. If your only getting internet for the streaming then it’s much easier since I buy my own equipment all I have to do is call one provider to turn on their service and the other to turn off theirs. No one needs to come out.

The retention people were the most difficult actually. They are the ones that hung up on me. I started with chat. Person was pleasant but had no authority to do anything and put me in contact with retention. Oh well, it is what it is but in the event I have an option, I’m gone.

@doschicos I see T-Mobile is going to offer $50/mo 50mpbs internet service soon, might be an option.

I’m so glad we have 2 providers because I switch between them every 12 months to keep the intro deal ($50/mo). Currently on DSL, will switch back to cable in a couple of months.

Love to see more competition than that - in our nearby city there are several and prices reflect that.

Whoa. It is already available in my area. Time to give it a try. ? Thanks for the tip!

Bummer. By invitation only. Wait lists etc.

Report back on this please. I pay Rcn $50 for 150 mps on a promotion. But that will end soon. Time to call them again and see what other promos they have. They are much better then Comcast

Comcast says you can get a ‘free’ box with content to stream if you are an internet only customer, Xfinity Flex. It does increase your taxes in my state by about $1. Anyone done this? I am not sure why they are making this offer, no contract, nothing to benefit them that I see.

Retention when you get competition, if you don’t have it already?

Keeping their box in your house benefits them in ways beyond the foregone monthly fee. Yes, retention but I bet they are also tracking your activity.

I agree. But roku and Amazon firestick and all the rest track (and often sell) your activity data also. Heck even the TV itself.

I’d think Comcast can already track you though, being the internet provider?
