I have a resale shop in my area where apparently ladies-who-lunch wear things once and drop them off to be sold. Latest “splurges” over the past year -
$150 for a Moncler ski jacket. Similar ones retail at Nordstrom for over $1000.
$198 for a black Prada handbag with buttery leather. Retail around $1200.
$90 for a full length North Face puffy coat ( in our weather, having both a ski jacket and a long coat is necessary)
They are very picky about what they take. I tried to sell a relative’s Chanel bag there. We absolutely knew it was real but didn’t have enough authentication so they refused it. You won’t find, say, Gap or Ann Taylor or Talbots or similar mall stores there. I routinely go there with clothing to sell and get rejected since it’s not high end enough :-).
We have a high-end resale shop that takes “used” fancy goods as well as new stuff from the designers. I got a pair of brand new Manola Blahniks for $85. I thought that was pretty sweet.
Probably our biggest splurge, year in and year out, is season football tickets to our alma mater and a tailgate spot. We have a blast and it’s worth every penny.
Well - H and I just splurged and booked a trip to Aruba for late arch. The “splurge” was a luxury resort even though it’s not off-season yet. We don’t do a ton of traveling so when we do, we try to do it up…Hopefully it’s “worth splurging for”…!!!
Beer. I don’t drink Budweiser, or Miller, or Coors. The cheapest I buy is Sapporo or Asahi, and I love microbrews. California has some really great stuff. Sure, I’m spending 9 to 12 dollars on a six pack on a college budget, but that just means I drink less than my peers to compensate, which is probably a good thing. I like my beer tasting good, anyway. I think in a month I go through a six pack (Probably custom made from the singles walls at work or Trader Joe’s for variety) and about two bottles of wine (Either an 8-12 dollar bottle from work, something on sale, or a cheap bottle of Barefoot or Yellowtail.).
@Hlmom I like moscato, too. Barefoot makes a good moscato that costs $5-5.50 at San Francisco supermarkets, and their red moscato is even better. Barefoot in general is really good for drinkable wine on a budget.
In terms of splurging on wine, something around 12 dollars is up there for me. I do really like 19 Crimes, though, which is about that price. Their red blend is really good for something that isn’t sweet but also isn’t super dry.
Spaceship, if you like smooth reds with not too much oaky flavor, try Apothic Red. It is about $10.
Speaking of coat splurges… 'S Cube coats! I added a third one this winter, and can use the existing “bling” on all of them. Maybe I can even swap the cuffs… Fun!
Yes, I’m good with Barefoot, but drink wine and other alcohol maybe a handful of times/year. We have 2 bottles of moscato and a bottle of champagne in the fridge. No idea when we will drink any of it. Costco has a very nice bubbly moscato in a blue bottle they put on sale for $9 periodically. It’s one we all like too. Off coupon, I think it’s $12-13.
Areas where I splurge:
Quality food
Travel
Quality sheets and towels
A good education for my kids
A housekeeper every 2 weeks - cheaper than marital counseling!
Paying myself first = Early retirement
Original artwork
Music festival tickets
Where I am “cheap”:
Don’t eat out too often and will cook most meals from scratch
Cars - buy what I want but drive it for 10-15 years or more
Jewelry/cosmetics/perfume/spa stuff like manicures, hair coloring, massages - don’t wear it or use it
Don’t drink alcohol or coffee, smoke or gamble
clothing - I go for comfort over fashion. Comfy pants, a t-shirt and Chuck Taylors work for me 90% of the time.
Big user of my local library and the used bookstore
