Stuff worth SPLURGING for

Covered parking at airport lots.

Heated steering wheel and seat covers would be a nice splurge.

Heck, all the things the new rental cars have which my cars from last century don’t:
Heated seats, iPod/USB plugin, rear view camera, remote car key, smart proximity key (questionable utility,)
trunk open/close remote, etc

MODERATOR"S NOTE:
While this is not a “no response” thread, please limit the responses to something at least slightly tangential to the topic. “Oooh, heated floors. Good idea” is fine; “I wonder what the weather is like outside” and “is so-and-so a man or a woman” are not. There are plenty of stream-of-consciousness threads here that allow one to release his/her Walter Mitty.

OK, retrying. It would be a real splurge to have a local share what the weather is on the Vail pass  @payn4ward

It would be a real splurge to have one’s digital footprint erased freely.
(Thanks to CC super moderator’s free service!)
It costs a lot of money to have things erased on other social media or website postings from decades past.

It magically erased my memory as well though, so I’m bound to make the same mistake of wrong postings on CC.

I don’t know why no notification showed up from your @jym626’s post. Hope you arrived there safely.

http://www.cotrip.org/ is as close to as it can get to a local weather share.

You’re welcome  ; I would splurge on that as well.

As I said on another thread, as @GMTplus7 started out this thread, Global Entry was the best $100 I have ever spent.

Global Entry!

I wouldn’t have missed those three flights by a few minutes due to 40 minute long security lines at DIA.

I just found out Global Entry is good for 5 years as I did not read OP earlier. I’m getting it ASAP for all family members.

Solar power. I am about to splurge on solar power. I really, really, really love up-front paying for stuff so that there are no/few costs down the road.

I must have missed the memo. Is there something going on here that I missed?

I still love my down mittens.

Global entry apparently takes an interview that isn’t available in all states or is limited to some major cities in states. Is there some way around that–or rather alternative ways to do the interview part? I would love to sign up but it appears to be a major hassle.

@gouf78

Global Entry interview locations are at many major hub airports. Just take care of the application & preliminary approval first-- takes about 1 week and the $100 application fee.

The next step is to schedule the interview. I found out that it is possible to do a “walk-in” interview on a different day, provided you do have some interview date scheduled.

I suggest u aim to do the interview in conjuction w an upcoming trip that connects thru a major hub. Just budget a generous amount of transit time in that airport. They’ll process walk-ins once they’ve taken care of the scheduled interviews. That means you may have to wait quite a while for your turn.

The interview lasts 10 min and consists of asking about your travel plans and then taking your photo & fingerprints.

I want down mittens!

I don’t know about down mittens, but we splurged on really good ski mittens, the kind with fleece gloves inside the mitten. Look like this on the outside (but a different brand because there was a little G on the hook)

Your hands will never be cold, even the fingertips!

GoreTex ski gloves/mittens w removable liners and with a goggle squeegee.

DS took three pairs of those ski mittens (required) to Okpik (winter snow camping) to build Quinzhee (sort of igloo to sleep in.)

While we are at mountaineering/outdooring, Merino Wool Socks!

Not heavy but light ones.

We love Rohner of Switzerland wool socks. They are hard to find (or were) and we first got them through Sierra Trading Post. Their trekker socks have a super thick layer that surrounds the bottom and sides of your feet, while the top is light and breathable and the leg part is ribbed so it stays up. Super soft wool, not a bit of itch. This is their oldest variety, they have more high tech stuff too.

German Falke wool ski socks. Precise shoe sizes (not just generic S M L), seamless toe & sculpted for L & R foot.

Also worth it was the EUR 400 I splurged on a Spider ski jacket. I love it!

I love Spyder jackets too.
Since I splurge only on kids, my kids get to wear only Spyder.

If one is too snobby for discounted Spyder jackets (very common around here,) consider a Bogner instead.

This would match my helmet (bought on sale - probably due to color) and be very easy to spot on the slope.
I will have to check if they have one at Last Call.

For ski wear Kjus is what I would invest in. Buy it once and it is for a lifetime.

Speaking of hosiery, Wolford tights, especially Velvet Deluxe, are a worthy splurge that saves money in the long run. I have a pair that has been heavily washed and worn over 4 winters and still looks great, no snags or holes.
