I convinced the contractor to add a screen door when he installed a new solid oak front door. I am so happy–we use it pretty much all the time and it helps with cross ventilation. If not for H’s objections and reservations, we would have done it years sooner. He’s now glad we did it too!
According to the news today the Hermes Birkin bag is a better investment than stocks and gold. That apparently could be a very practical splurge.
To counter the “not worth it” thread: my Miele front loader. Washes everything from lace bras to king sized comforters - perfectly.
I’m not sure collectibles, including lovely leather bags are suitable for our HI climate–too much heat, humidity and big tends to age and discolor things and collections.
The independent kitchen consultant I hired for an hour or two before we remodeled our kitchen some ten odd years ago. Her suggestions were simple and cheap, like adding and hanging shelves very close together so the cabinets would hold more, tall drawer under sink vs. cabinet, moving flatware and glasses to a tiny corner cabinet that otherwise held almost nothing, using a lazy susan to make bottles and stemware more accessible on high shelves, etc.
I want a screen door on the front.
It’s fabulous to have a screen door and catch the breezes and be able to see out the front door and greet your neighbors. I highly recommend and wished I had insisted much sooner!
OK, so we didn’t win Powerball.
But the $2 I threw into the pool at work was worth every penny. For a few days, we could laugh and dream about what we would do if we won. And while the odds of winning were reported to be equal to the odds of being struck by lightening-- twice!-- that’s OK. We all got a lot of mileage out of spending a few days dreaming about what we would do with all that money-- all the lives we would and could change.
For $2, I figure it was a bargain.
My home. It didn’t seem like a splurge when we bought it almost 30 years ago. But now, with high property taxes and the house itself in need of a lot of work, it does seem extravagant to keep it. But oh, the location: the lot backs up to a nature preserve, and this house is one of the few of the several that abut the preserve that has a large backyard. It’s such a refuge for me.
Add LaPerla to the list
(Lol, I initially had a typo: “lust” instead of “list”)
LaPerla underwear: http://www.laperla.com/us/uscfilpd0020537.html
They’re $614. For one pair.
My goodness.
I will add to that - good undies for running. After buying a pair of Under Armour sport underwear, I would never go back. Those things do not move and I know any runner will agree, being distracted by underwear does not make for a good race.
This past summer H and I celebrated our 40th anniversary with a backyard party for roughly 50 people, including members of our bridal party, some college and current friends, some neighbors, our children, their partners, our grandchild, and other extended family members.
The splurge was to have it catered – with butlered hors d’oevres, hot entrees, tables, chairs and linens provided and set up in advance by caterer, a bartender, etc. It was the first time I have had a catered party (other than our wedding) and it was wonderful to be able to relax and just focus on our guests, some of whom had traveled significant distances to attend. The caterers were wonderful – even, when several guests showed up with flowers, finding vases and arranging and displaying the flowers on the serving tables. Of course they took care of cleanup, etc. as well. I was like a guest at my own party!
S did a playlist (using Pandora but with ads blocked) of love songs we liked from our dating days through present – had it playing from a portable stereo in the back yard, as well as booming from three sources in the house (near windows). (We are on an acre so no noise complaints.) S also strung up white lights for decor.
Only problem is that I am now spoiled – fell in love with entertaining via caterer! But H and I consider it a very special memory. (One day weeks after, H came across a caterer’s fork from the event on the lawn, and said that fork was a special souvenir of the lovely occasion.) A neighbor took pics for me and I put together a Snapfish album.
Truly worth it!
We are trying to convince our two sons that a wedding reception in the backyard would be a great way to go. What you did sounds ideal, @JEM.
@JEM Your party sounds perfect…nothing like being a guest at your own house!
LaPerla is not really for undies but special lingerie. And I don’t have to pay for that - H is more than happy to pay for it!
I certainly would not pay $614 for one pair of those lace panties - but they do look nice.
LaPerla makes much lower priced undies, too.
My down mittens. After last winter’s extreme cold, I vowed to get some for myself. While this winter hasn’t been nearly as bad, on the few very cold days we’ve had, they’ve kept my fingers warm. Well worth the cost.
^^ that reminds me of something H splurged on for my Xmas gift…heated gloves!!! They have rechargeable batteries and keep my hands toasty warm on our walks. I scoffed when he mentioned them (and I think they were expensive), but now I’m a true believer!!
cashmere sweaters!! So soft and warm - gotta love them. @JustaMom5465 I’ll try those heated gloves too!
