Suggestions for deferred to accepted (applied to Northwestern ED)

I applied to Northwestern early decision. Got deferred into the regular decision pool but still want to attend Northwestern (my #1 dream school). How can I possibly increase my chances of acceptance in the regular decision round? Any suggestions on how to tackle a letter of continued interest? Feel free to comment! Thanks!

Did you submit a test score?

For your LOCI, give any meaningful updates…good S1 grades in rigorous classes, any activities updates.

You can reiterate what you (hopefully) included in the supplemental essays. How you will engage at NU…a major/program you are interested in, a specific class or two you will take, a prof you’d like to do research with and why, clubs you would join or even start. Nothing about how you like the campus or can see yourself sitting on the lakefront beach, or others things of that nature.

The best advice is to mentally move on. Northwestern doesn’t publish their waitlist size, but assume that it is huge. It could be in the thousands. NW took 69 and 83 students off the WL the last two years.

A deferral is not a rejection! Hopefully you have great S1 grades. Send a LOCI that clearly identifies why it remains number 1. Make sure there is no element of sour grapes. Add any new honors or awards. If more awards/honors occur before the first of March, send another short update. Good luck! Spend some time loving other schools in case it doesn’t work out.

OP was deferred to RD, not waitlisted.

I’d recommend you write a short LOCI (admissions officers are not looking for additional essays to read). Note any meaningful achievements since the application was submitted (if there were any) and reaffirm that the school is your top choice.

Once the LOCI is submitted I recommend you move past Nortwestern mentally and start to get excited about other college options.

From Northwestern, they say:

Early Decision candidates whose admission decisions were deferred to spring should ensure we receive a midyear transcript as soon as it is available, and no later than mid-February. You may upload those through the Common Application or Coalition with Scoir platforms or send directly to ug- admission@northwestern.edu. We anticipate admitting a small number of deferred candidates through our Regular Decision round. While we neither require nor expect deferred candidates to submit additional information or letters of support, students who wish to send updates may submit those via their online applicant portal.
