Suggestions needed for a last minute fall vacation

Due to a possible job change, DH and I may have up to 14 days for a vacation in late November. Assuming S will not be coming home for Thanksgiving, we are open to traveling almost anywhere in the US and Europe. Budget will be around $5000. We have never vacationed in the fall so I’m asking for suggestions on the best places to consider.

I would go to San Diego. There is plenty to do there, and the weather is nice. Not hot but nice. Just Balboa Park and the zoo take a lot of time. A day trip to Coronado, a day trip to Disney, a day trip to La Jolla, a day trip into the mountains to a small town like Julian. Lots of good food. Just a nice place.

If you can get an apartment for two weeks through airbnb or VRBO, you should be within your budget.

Palm Springs? Arizona?

What are your interests? Hiking? Golf? Longing by the pool? Shopping?

Italy is gorgeous in the fall-- it’s not so beastly hot. Ditto Greece. In the US-- Charleston, New Orleans, San Diego? New England too, of course, though it’s too late now to look at foliage.

I’m sorry, I should have included more info. We are from CA and San Diego is our hometown. thumper, your suggestion is exactly what I would give to anyone wanting to visit SD! Our regular short trips include PS and AZ,HI. I would have loved to see the leaves turn in NE but I know its too late.

I love culture, museums, theater, etc. DH golfs but also enjoys what I enjoy especially when its in a new destination. Spain is on his list while I wouldn’t mind going to Boston or Chicago because I’ve never been.

Jaylynn, I think Greece would be a place we would agree on.

Ok…so hometown is out!

How about the southeastern part of the U.S? Charleston, Atlanta, savannah.

Or you could go to Key West. It’s funky but fun.

You could do a 10 day southern carribean cruise.

Washington DC…plenty to do there! PLENTY.

Santa Fe…might be chilly but very nice.

Spain? Southern Italy?

What about Hawaii?

I love New England in the fall. I did Bike Vermont with my sister. Great food at some inns. We did get snow in for a few days. I don’t remember which month.

End of November could be much more like winter around here (New England). Still it is a beautiful area.

You could fly into Boston and do Boston things. Then rent a car…drive out to Cape Cod…just to see it. Drive north to Portland Maine…very nice drive, and Portland is fun. Figure out how to go west into NH. Maybe drive to North Conway. Then drive back south to Boston to finish the trip.

Oh…you could also include a day drive to Newport. I think the mansions might be decorated for the holidays by that time!

Pebble Beach if you just want to relax and h plays golf. Might be too too close to home or too cool.

Barcelona - though $5K doesn’t seem like enough to do a Europe trip, imo.

I wouldn’t do NE in November. It can be very dreary, damp & chilly and it gets dark early. I’m getting depressed just thinking about it.

I’m leaning towards the Southeast. We have friends in Charlotte and I’ve always wanted to visit Savannah and Atlanta. This is where DH and I will have to hash it out. He prefers one destination where he can unpack his bags once. OTH, I don’t mind multi-city trips.

Hmmm. Someone will have to help me. Fly into Jacksonville FL and then spend a couple of days there relaxing. Then go to the island that is near there…I’m sorry but I can’t remember the name! You can also do a day trip or overnight to Savannah on that trip.

Savannah is a great vacation spot. Historic, beautiful views, the ocean, fresh seafood, so much to see and do, or choose to relax and chill. I know both Charlotte and Atlanta, and having lived in both places, it seems harder to view those cities as touristy destination spots. But they each have some great places to explore.

I would suggest Savannah (and Tybee Island next door) and maybe Charleston SC as well. It is about a 2 hour drive north from Savannah.

I would not do DC in late November. It is just not a good weather time usually. We love to head south that time of year. We like Hilton Head even though it is off season and cooler. It is walking on the beach with windbreaker and jeans weather. We also like FL since it is warmer. Carribean would be at the end of hurricane season so that would be good.

lilmom, with two weeks, take one week to visit some cities - Charlotte, Savannah, Atlanta, Charlseston- then one week to stay put at one destination - at your southernmost place of interest -.maybe New Orleans

I take it you have been to New Orleans?

If you decide on New Mexico, Sante Fe and Taos, etc., many threads on this area.

N.Carolina–Charleston, Ashville, etc. I can offer specific hotel suggestions. Again, prior threads on this area.

FL? What are your interests? space museum? Parks? Key West? Orlando interests

What mominva said! It’s called compromise! HaHa!
(I have the same issue with my husband, so I feel for ya!)

Agree with Singersmom. I would also rule out Boston for the same reason, and would not recommend Seattle, although both are wonderful places to visit :)

The end of November is when Christmas markets start to pop up in places like Germany and France, so it could be fun to visit those, but with just a week and a $5000 budget, I think you could do much better domestically, because you would not be spending 1/3 or your budget on tickets and 1/3 of your vacation time on the road.

Love @mominva idea of having one week to move around cities, and one week to relax at the beach. Georgia and SC beaches will be much cooler than the Florida beaches, but still lovely. You have to decide if you can handle jeans and a windbreaker for walks on the beach, or if you need to head further south.

Key West is the hardest place to get to, but well worth it. The sunset celebrations by the water are priceless, but the cost of airline tickets directly into Key West are outrageous.
