St Simons Island ?

St Simons Island ?

Maybe Amelia Island is what Thumper is thinking of?

I agree with the Southeast coast. There is so much to see: Charleston, Savannah, even Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach, Jacksonville, Amelia Island, heard that Kiawah Island Beach (just south of Charleston) is gorgeous too.

If H wants to stay put in one location, I always suggest Spain/Portofino as my dream vacation…lots of beaches to the south and culture, museums, nightlife, restaurants…

That’s it! st. Simons Island. Friends flew to Jacksonville. They stayed there for a few days and relaxed…then met family on St. Simons. They said it was wonderful. I believe it’s close enough that you could actually go to Savannah for part of the trip…then to St. Simons.

I vote for the obvious choice: New York!

oops. Post #21: Portofino is in Italy. I’m thinking of Costa Del Sol in Spain and the Spanish Riviera.
I guess it all boils down to what you & H prefer in this kind of vacation…

Spain is a possibility. I just heard that my brother’s friend’s vacation home near Malaga, Spain is available for free. He stays in my brother’s house when they visit the U.S. Before I get too excited, I have to see if the airfare is reasonable.

I was going to suggest a cruise like this: <a href=“American Cruise Lines Page Not Found - 404 Error”>American Cruise Lines Page Not Found - 404 Error; until I saw the prices. Unpack once and see multiple cities!

If you decide to go to the Southeast US–also consider Sea Island, Georgia. The Cloisters resort there is really top notch. It’s a great spot if you want to be near/on the water and be pampered. You could combine a beach trip for four or five days with sightseeing in Savannah or Charleston the rest of the time. Friend of my recently went to Cumberland Island (another Georgia barrier island) and loved it.

You’d need to get a really good deals on airline tickets to consider Europe. Maybe others could post recommended websites to check?

Marilyn, cruising around the southeast sounds like a perfect compromise but you’re right, the prices!

Spain is out of the running even with free accommodations. Airfare was too high.

Turning my attention back to the southeast to see if a two or three city trip that includes Key West (DH is a Hemingway fan) is something we can agree on. Sea Island, GA looks interesting. Thumper, I’ll also check out St. Simons . Time to get out the map!

DC is would be a great choice in November museum-wise and the theater season should have begun too. Arena Stage and the Kennedy Center usually have great offerings. The parks wouldn’t be at their best, but depending on when in November we are talking about their might still be some fall foliage. Savannah is just gorgeous - the NYT travel section had an article about it this past weekend. I was in Atlanta last January - in perfect weather by chance. It’s got a nice collection of museums and some pretty parks and plenty of great food too.

If you are serious about Key West, fly to Miami or Ft Lauderdale. It is only a few hours drive from either, and lots of interesting sites along the way. Are you hotel people, or B & B?

lilmom, November is still a good month to visit Hilton Head. Good weather for everything, other than ocean swimming. The island has 50+ miles of bike trails, theatre, hundreds of restaurants, shopping, cultural events, boat tours, great nature and bird watching and tours, a Concours D’Elegance (in Nov. but not sure of this year’s dates), large variety of accomodations from hotels/resorts to private rental condos and homes, and more golf courses than your husband could try. Charleston and Savannah are both an easy day trip from there so you could explore both cities without packing up and unpacking more than once. Other pretty little historic towns like Beaufort and Bluffton are even closer. We have a second home there so if you do decide on that area and want more specific recommendations, feel free to PM me.

With up to 2 weeks, how about 5 days in Chicago - the city may be decorated for Christmas by then - you can eat, shop and visit your way through the city and then fly south for the rest of the vacation to lounge on a beach somewhere. A little busy city, a lot of warm relaxing lounging. :)

Antigua Guatemala, with side trips to Lake Atitlan and/or Tikal (ruins of huge Mayan city).

bookworm, we’ve never stayed in a B&B but there’s always a first time! So many great suggestions! Consolation, we were in Antigua last July and we absolutely loved it. Our Ds would never forgive us if we went back without them.

I’ve spent more than one inexpensive Thanksgiving vacation in Italy. I would recommend a two week stay in a town such as Arezzo. Prices for an apartment in the center range from 75-100 dollars a night. You can take daily side trips on the train to a number of other Tuscan towns. Florence is just an inexpensive 25-35 minutes away. The Euro/Dollar exchange rate is in your favor and the food in Tuscany and Umbria is absolutely spectacular this time of year. Arezzo is one of my favorite places.
Here is a place that I am looking into for my next trip.

www.casabidini.com

check it out on Tripadvisor: $88 per night.

I’ve always wanted to go to Key West but when is hurricane season?

^I believe the end of hurricane season is Nov. 30th but hasn’t it been pretty quiet this year?

lilmom:

If your H wants Key West, why not an all Florida vacation? There is so much to do & see, combined with relaxing on beaches. Miami has shopping, nightlife, culture, restaurants, museums, South Beach, Bayside Marketplace, air boat tours, boat excursions…from Miami it’s roughly 3 1/2 hours to Key West. You could also break it up a bit and head first to Key Largo…my kids swam with Sea Lions there and Key Largo has incredible snorkeling opportunities…heading west from Miami, there’s Marco Island, Sanibel & Captiva Islands for relaxing on the beach, up the West coast is Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, etc.,etc.,etc. East coast of Florida there is Disney World, Cape Canaveral Space Center, Daytona Beach…lots to do & see right in Florida!
Further north on the east coast is Jacksonville and right past that into Georgia would be Savannah. Let us know what you all decide!
