Summer Acting programs that are cheap!

Any idea’s? I’m talking the east coast. Cheap is not a couple of thousand dollars. Any free scholarships which you have to write an essay for? I also would prefer something about 2 weeks and less than $1,000. I like a program like this: [Summer Acting Programs ? The New York Conservatory For Dramatic Arts Summer Acting School ? NYC Summer Acting Classes](http://www.sft.edu/programs/summerProgram.html)

I would be 15 and I don’t want to go to a summer camp but more of a summer workshop. I don’t want anything like a camping trip. Any good programs? I prefer to be with kids my own age. Ty!

I don’t have an answer of a specific program that costs under $1000. However, I do not believe that any OVERNIGHT program is going to come in at that cost even for tuition but then there is room/board. If that is your budget, then a day program is more feasible. That means a local program where you don’t have to pay for room/board.

You may, however, be able to find a ONE week program at that price.

While this program will not interest you, but just as a point of reference, Interlochen has a MT one week intensive for $895.

I do not think you will find an overnight program for two weeks for $1000 very easily. But you may find a day program in that price range.

Does your state have Governor’s Institutes? Any for theater/acting? That would be one place to look.

I wasn’t looking for overnight trips, should have said that. Anyway, I would like a program in New York, Florida or Georgia. I wouldn’t need housing for these states. I liked North Carolina of Arts but too long and too much money. Ty

Oh, I just did a Google Search. My state does but you have to be a rising junior or senior. Ah well!

I don’t know what you mean but not “looking for an overnight trip.” Programs that are not in your local area and are for high school age students usually include housing of some sort. There are some that do not include housing such as Circle in the Square Theater School in NYC (though you will still have expenses living away from home on top of the tuition, even if you do not have to pay rent).

I gave Circle in the Square as an example of a program that doesn’t include housing, but it owuld not fit your needs as it is for seven weeks and is over your budget.

Many programs geared to high school age involve housing since usually high school kids (particularly your age) are not expected to live on their own yet.

I was talking about day trips to a program. I have family which I can live with.

I found you something in NYC…of course you will have to add in the cost to fly there…

It is through US Performing Arts Camps…

[Atlantic Theater Company - Film Acting](http://www.usperformingarts.com/604.php)

As you can see, it is for five days and not two weeks like you wanted but you are not going to be able to find one for two weeks for $1000.

Please be aware that this is run through US Performing Arts Camps…not NYU or Atlantic.

I just noticed that you have to be sixteen and you are fifteen. That is another problem. Many programs for your age that are not local are overnight ones. Those where students are on their own for housing are geared toward those who are at least 16.

In my opinion, given your parameters of cost and location and age…

Your best bets are local programs where you live that are not overnight.

OR

If you have housing in NYC at no cost (as well as other living expenses)…you could live in NYC and take acting classes as opposed to a set intensive program which costs more.

Check out your local community college or University. We live in South Texas, so not on your list, but our cc has a day program for high schoolers intersted in theater and the university has a two week program that includes staying the dorms/food for around $900. I’ve heard good things about both programs.

I have family members in NY which were close two. One lives an hour away from the city and the other is in Brooklyn. I know people who live in Manhattan but really don’t know them enough to live with them. Also, the thing your talking about sounds great. Maybe next year and I would be able to get money for that. I was offered to go to NYC about three years ago to do print modeling for the summer. We didn’t go because it was too close to school. I was going to stay with one of those people. But I know my agent has someone who I could sign with for the summer for acting. I could go on auditions and take some acting classes. I would have to take the train or subway for my auditions and my aunt works. My parents told me last time that wouldn’t happen. They think I would get mugged or hurt. We are actually going to a wedding in July so I be in NY anyways. I go back to school in August so programs may be too late.

I also was going to go to UGA’s journalism workshop. I was going to apply for the scholarship for free, but it’s only $525 for 5 days. I was also trying to take Chemistry this summer so I could take AP Art History next year. It would be a relief that I wouldn’t have to take Chemistry in the school year but it wouldn’t be Honors. There really isn’t much where I live. I know some programs but it’s MT and some are more for little kids. I did a summer swim team last year but I was never there because I went to lots of places. I was also going to visit Bard College at Simon’s Rock & have an interview, but that’s only 2 and a half hours from the city. I also go to visit my grandparents for 2-4 weeks. So, lots of options for the summer. I don’t know how to convince my parents of the NYC idea. What do you think? Ty!

SUNY Purchase in Westchester County, NY offers a couple of pre-college (14-18 years old) programs in Musical Theatre and Shakespeare.

ProudDad…the SUNY Purchase Pre-College program looks real good. However, it is four weeks and costs $1880 (that truly is cheap but I think that just covers the day program). But that costs more than early_college wants and is much longer as well, than he wants. And he’d have to commute.

early_college, if you can stay in NYC and take some classes, that might be a good option, but your parents may not wish to let you lose in NYC as a rising HS soph.

Look into options in your own region that are not overnight. Again, many states have Governor’s Institutes.

Also, if you are serious about pursuing acting in college and beyond, you may have to start making choices as a teen…stay in swim team? do many things? focus on training to enter a college program for acting? and so on. I have a daughter who did many things but she applied to BA schools. My daughter who entered a BFA, however, used to do many things, but gave up all of her sports (soccer, ski racing, figure skating) in middle school, to focus just on the one area (and many facets of that area): theater, which she had been involved in since age 4. I’m not telling you to give up swim team but you may have to make some choices if you want to enter a professional degree program in college in acting. If you are undecided, that is perfectly fine. But a BA path in college is more suitable and in that case, keep your swim team up and take acting classes, and so on.

The Alliance Theater in Atlanta has an on-camera camp plus a few others … [Alliance Theatre: Summer Camps - Acting and Drama for Kids and Youth in Atlanta, GA](http://www.alliancetheatre.org/education.aspx?id=4786#camera) Looks like they are only part time, but you could possibly attend both sessions for under $500.

Fishbowl, thanks for finding that for the OP. That is exactly the kind of program I think he should be looking for…a local day program, given his cost restraints. Sounds good.

Ty everyone. The Alliance Theater is a drive but would be manageable. Advanced Acting Camp and the Camera Camp 2009 both sound great. Thanks guys, and I will shortly look into it more. This is something I need and think my agent would think it’s a good idea. Also, I’m on the swim team for exercise & to have fun! I’m not there to socialize but just like to have a good workout and don’t have time when I am home. I also think the “Be a Teaching Assistant” may be good for the following years. I have always done good with young children and did something similar before. I like the Camera Camp 2009 better and it’s all day. If I did the Advanced Acting it would only be three hours and my father would have to wait for me. It wouldn’t be worth the drive. I don’t think the Purchase program would have worked out for three reasons. 1. Money a problem 2. Family not in that area 3. MT and Shakespeare not my thing. I hope to convince my parents to do the NYC agent thing, lol. Thanks guys!

Also I did say this, but my state does have a Governor’s Institutes. You have to be a rising junior or senior so I can’t do it.
