I agree with post #13s word choice. Love and Mercy was mesmerizing. I feel like I didn’t move or breathe the entire movie!
I’ve seen Far from the Madding Crowd twice. Talk about eye candy! Matthias Schoenaerts ( and his magnificent shoulders) are very enticing! Lovely costumes as well.
My son highly recommends Me and Earl and the Dying Girl which has only been released in selected markets. He saw a pre-screening at his film graduate school. The movie won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance. The information that I have read emphasizes that it is unexpectedly funny. We had a special interest in the movie as the book was written by a graduate of son’s high school who went on to graduate from Harvard. The movie was filmed in the now closed (supposedly unsafe but safe enough for movie making) high school building that S attended for two years.
I think I mentioned when H and I were walking out of the movie, I told him I’d really like to see the Beach Boys in concert (I’m the only family member who hasn’t). I knew they were coming to the area soon, and we almost bought tickets, but then I discovered Brian Wilson is not touring with them. However… he is touring, and will be here on July 6th, so we got tickets to see him! For those who are familiar with Ravinia in the Chicago area, the concert is there, and we got pavilion seats, so I’m looking forward to hearing his new music (as well as a few old ones).
I think when a movie inspires you to some sort of action (like buying concert tickets, traveling to some place, etc.) it’s done a good thing.
I’ve been listening to Brian Wilson’s new album, “No Pier Pressure,” for the last couple of weeks. It has collaborations with Kacey Musgraves, Blondie Chaplin and Nate Ruess, among others. A lot of it is worth listening to over and over. I’ll have to see if he’s coming here this summer.
Just saw Jurassic World. It was okay. the dinosaurs were very good, the plot was just okay. The two children in the movie could have been left out without anything missing from the movie. Some things were unbelievable (besides the dinosaurs…) but I was willing to let them slide.
What I found more annoying was the woman who brought her two young children with her (ages 7 and 4?) to see this PG-13 movie. Really? What were you thinking? They ended up leaving after the first dinosaur was killed. There was not a lot of blood involved but it was graphic- people being eaten, dismembered body parts etc. My pet peeve- people who do not read about a movie before bringing their young children in to see it. /end rant/
My hobby is movie going, so next week we’ll probably see Inside Out. Still thinking about going to see San Andreas… I know its cheesy but come on, the special effects have got to have something going for them…
Just got home from Spy… can’t remember if anyone upthread opined that the story line is left such that there can be a sequel if they wish to do so; at least it seemed obvious to me that they’re already thinking sequel. I loved the quirky pairing of Miranda Hart and Melissa McCarthy, and the reunion of Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne. Parts were pretty funny, but some sort of dragged as I was waiting for the next comedic part.
Teri, I downloaded Endless Summer (which is early, surfer-y) and Pet Sounds (which was where Brian Wilson started to show his true musical genius) and I am in love with the song You Still Believe in Me. They played a snippet of it in the movie. I seriously would see this movie again in a heartbeat and I am not a movie person.
I really liked Love&Mercy, except for the fact that Paul Dano looked so much like my college boyfriend that it was distracting for me to watch him. We took D to see the film without telling her anything about the real story, so she was expecting a lighthearted romp through the sixties and seventies. She was surprised and impressed that the Wilson’s story was much darker and more complex than what she had assumed it would be. (My husband and I felt just a little wicked that we hadn’t briefed her, but it was very interesting to see her reaction.)
Saw Insidious 3 (I was definitely the oldest person in the theatre) and Pitch Perfect 2 this weekend. Want to see Mad Max and Love and Mercy. I liked the preview for The Gift. I’d watch that. Inside Out looked cute if I still had to see kid movies. The one with Kristen Wiig and Owen Wilson looked really stupid (forgot the name now).
Jurassic World was okay. It lacked the immersion of Jurassic Park. The plot also seemed disjointed to me, like they were trying to hard to tie it into the first film somehow. Characters were mostly forgettable.
The ending though… the ending is awesome!
S1 saw Aloha last night with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, and others. He said it was not very good, scattered plot, odd story. I expected better from Cameron Crowe.

I’ve seen the Beach Boys twice, forty years ago, but I just went to keep friends company, not a fan, despite trying to appreciate that genre.
I’ve heard that Jurrassic World is good, & to see it in 3-d.
I may go see SPY tonight. Tomorrow is a difficult anniversary for me, (my dad died 40 yrs ago, & we lost a baby before delivery, 34 yrs ago) but it’s also the last day of school.
Also our lab would have been 21!
And I’ve heard it is pretty funny, although some comedies are not as hysterical as advertised, & I am a hard case.
