Summer movies.

I actually saw Brian Wilson in concert two weeks ago… had to get tickets after seeing the movie.

I think my husband might like to see Brian Wison, is that the name of the movie title too?

The only thing we’ve seen is Jurassic Park. It was exactly what I expected- fast and fun. I’ve stayed away from Love & Mercy as I’m not a big Beach Boys fan, but I’ve heard it is good. It’s so hot out, maybe I’ll go! My D and I saw Danny Collins with Al Pacino at the beginning of summer. We both really liked it and the music was great-a lot of Beatles. I kind of want to see Minions as the trailer really made me laugh.

Dr google, the movie about Brian Wilson is called Love and Mercy. I absolutely loved it, have seen it twice and would go again.

You don’t have to be a Beach Boys fan. I was only an average/moderate fan before the movie and now I’m a huge fan and in awe of BW’s genius.

He is soooooo much more than lighthearted doo wop songs about girls, surfing and cars. He had the talent of Lennon/McCartney and that’s a pretty bold statement - he was just cut down by a confluence of sad events - abusive father, drugs, untreated mental illness and manipulative shrink.

Judging him on just the surfer songs we associate with the BB would be like judging the Beatles just on the teenybopperish, simplistic early songs like Love Me Do and She Loves You. Brian Wilson was the real deal, musically.

Mr. Holmes is in limited release. My guess is that the studio is waiting for the early return$ and will make a decision about wider distribution in another week or two. Seems like they skimped on the PR budget, despite the fact that it stars a young boy (to attract the young crowd?) and Magneto of Xmen fame.

Mr Holmes is playing at three local theatres.
Rated PG for themes, disturbing imagery and incidental smoking.
The Third Man is playing at another local theatre, I seem to remember smoking in that one too, but it is unrated.

Combining my own and D’s movie attendance and opinions, the verdicts are “okay” for Magic Mike XXL, “awful” for Terminator Genysis, “great” for Love and Mercy, and “a bit disappointing” for Inside Out. I think the last was the result of the movie being so wildly overhyped–it could never have lived up to all that advance praise, plus we paid extra for the 3D version, which was a total waste of money. (Actually, I think the only movie I’ve ever seen that merited the 3D surcharge was Avatar, which truly used the 3D effect to great aesthetic advantage. In every other movie, it’s just a gimmick.) As a big fan of Despicable Me and its sequel, I’m looking forward to Minions. It’s received mixed reviews, but just the sight of the little fellas makes me giggle, so I think it will be a spirit-raising experience.

So far I’ve seen Jurassic World and Minions. Jurassic was pretty good, but Minions was ‘meh’. Then again I find the minions themselves to be very irritating, lol.

Jurassic World, 10th anniversary of Serenity, Ant Man, Terminator…want to see Inside Out, Trainwreck, boys want to see Ted 2 will see…have a few more on the list for the rest of the summer, liked most okay but loved my Serenity…I aim to misbehave!

Spy was hilarious, although don’t go if foul language offends you!

Just returned from MI:5. Husband, (adult) son, daughter, son-in-law, and I all liked it. Action and humor worked well together.

Seeing Mr. Holmes this week too.

Just saw Mr. Holmes–excellent movie! Wonderful acting by everyone, but especially Ian McKellen. Also really enjoyed Ant-Man. Not your typical Marvel franchise movie (like Avengers), but more like Guardians of the Galaxy. Really entertaining, fun summer movie. Looking forward to seeing the new Mission Impossible. I loved all of the earlier ones and never mind seeing Tom Cruise in anything!
