Summer Music Festivals 2025

Congrats; is that Junior or Senior? That’s crazy they need a response so fast.

Junior. Last year they gave us 3 days.

Our daughter is strongly leaning toward accepting the offer she received from Ascent. Does anyone have any Ascent experiences to share? Does it have a good reputation? Right now she is thinking of attending the Violin intensive at Interlochen before going to Ascent. She would be choosing Ascent over Brevard (orchestra).

Hi! My son is also trying to decide between programs. May I ask why your daughter would choose Ascent over Brevard?

(And btw, we know several violin and viola players who attended Ascent last year. They had a great time. We heard it’s in a lovely setting and fairly organized.)

My daughter is leaning toward Ascent over Brevard because she already has significant experience participating in youth orchestras both during the school year and during prior summer experiences at Interlochen and other programs. Brevard seems amazing and we are certain she would have a terrific time but this summer she feels like a chamber setting may help her improve her craft more.

@JelloCello thank you for the helpful feedback re Ascent as well.

My son (15) is choosing Green Mountain over Interlochen for the chamber / small ensemble aspect that he wants to focus on (cello). Can anyone share their experience? Seems like there is a lot of private practice and only 1x a day small ensemble rehearsal with lessons & coaching mixed in. Any feedback on their program?

My daughter went to Ascent last year. She thought the lessons/teachers were great, but the chamber music was not up to the level she was used to in terms of organization and structure. There were a lot of group changes and switches, but the main issue wass they didn’t get much chamber music coaching. Having said that, she did enjoy the experience and the friends. As chamber programs go, it would not be at the top of my list but definitely not at the bottom either. However, generally for kids who are serious, they will grow a whole lot more at any chamber music program as compared to an orchestra one like Brevard.

Does anyone have any experience with Madeline Island? My high school age son has been to both Interlochen and BUTI and he is a competitive chamber musician. We are wondering about the level of the musicians, the coaching, the individual instruction and the overall program. Any thoughts or advice would be very welcome!

Hi! I was waitlisted for BUTI for 2 workshops and YAO and they said I was in the middle of the waitlist for the 2 workshops and the top of the waitlist for YAO. What are my chances of getting off the waitlist (as a violist)? Thanks!!

I have heard that if you are #1 or #2 on the waitlist you have a pretty good chance of getting in off the waitlist. Beyond that, it’s rare. Good luck!!

Thank you for the feedback concerning your daughter’s experience last year at Ascent. Have you heard any feedback concerning the Castleman Quartet Program? Our daughter was accepted into that program today. She is a high school sophomore. Any thoughts on whether Castleman would be a better experience or the IU (Jacobs School) Summer Strings Academy?

I believe there is also group cello class as well as master classes

I don’t know anybody who has gone to Castleman recently so I can’t help there other than that it tends to be very reputable but trends older. I do know some folks who went to Indiana before it shut down (it just restarted last year I think) so I don’t know how applicable those experiences will still be. What I heard is if you are with the top teacher for violin, everything is amazing there. But if you are not with the top teacher, you don’t get many opportunities. Again this experience is from about 5 years back, so may no longer be applicable.

I think you have a good chance of getting off the BUTI waitlist for viola. My daughter was accepted first round last year and turned it down, and about a month later they were still trying to fill viola spots.

Anyone waiting to getting off the Center Stage String? They said they’ll send out notification in a few days but this is our first year sending them application and I wonder if this is just their version of “rejection” or not? Thanks…

My daughter was waitlisted for CSS but received this message on Wednesday.
" We are reaching out to let you know that the waitlist for this program is now CLOSED . Our program is at capacity and all admitted students have confirmed their participation."
I’m not sure it’s only for violin or entire program.

Lemonade2, what instrument?

Thank you so much for your reply. My son’s instrument is violin. I contacted them on Wednesday evening and they said there are only a few spots left and said wait for the next few days.

Does anyone know when Bowdoin results will be out for cello?
